a M t . w. X i THE 1961 rio le VOLUME XL published by the students of PULASKI HIGH SCHOOL Pulaski, Virginia RUTH PHIBBS Editor WARREN ALLEY Business Manager JANICE JONES Associate Editor CLIFFORD SHELOR Associate Editor Endeavor The darkness of uncertainty slowly fades, vanquished by the lamp of learning; yet another decision awaits us. The road ahead has two sharp divisions. On the left, one winds through a lush field, rich with opportunity and ripe with success. We are quick to step in this direction until a distant feature catches our eye. Beyond this setting begins a long, rough road, a road furrowed with sorrow, rising and falling with disappoint- ment. We turn to the second road. It begins with a long, hard jour- ney leading finally to fields of success, which unlike the first field, continue endlessly as the result of hard labor in our field of endeavor. Therefore, we, as students of Pulaski High School, choose this road. Working for our success and reaping the ben- efits of our efforts is our field of endeavor. Participants in the S. C. A. sponsored talent show included David Parks, and in the background, the Oriole Dance Band. The Cheerleaders and students participated in Home- coming festivities at Y Clubs’ bonfire. Ali s Barkley, a senior, discusses college entrance plans with Rich- mond Professional Institute repre- sentative. Seniors decorate their Christmas tree for the enjoyment of the stu- dent body. Members of the Chemistry Class conduct an experiment with the help of Miss Dalton, teacher. Pulaski High Students shown voting in the mock presidential election. 5 Top: Cheerleaders cheering their team to victory at the Pulaski- Dublin game. Bottom: Oriole Band in half-time performance. Student teachers demonstrate package wrapping to homemak- ing classes. 7 Students leave school at the end of a day in their “fields of endeavor”. SPECIAL RECOGNITION We the Oriole Staff of 1961 recognize One whose memories comprise many “firsts” in the educational struc- ture of Pulaski County; One whose ideas and ideals serve school, community, and church ; One whose confidence and common sense inspires love and loyalty of fellow workers ; One whose name is honored among us by those preparing to enter her profession For countless contributions to our lives and the lives of Pulaskians be- fore us, We honor MISS EVA VAUGHAN. 9 Dedication As we consider the dedication of this 40th anniver- sary edition of the Oriole, we, the staff, think it fit- ting that we honor one of our most devoted teachers. With patience, understanding, and gentleness she has guided students in classes, clubs, and activities — a- mong these being Tri-Hi-Y, Science Club, senior class, 8th grade class, Chemistry Club, and Science Fair. Pulaski High School students of past years remember her as one of those faculty members remaining here as a loyal friend. In appreciation for her thirty-six years of faithful service to the students of Pulaski High School, we dedicate our 1961 Oriole to Miss Laura Dalton. 10 MISS LAURA DALTON 1 1 Ruth Phibbs Senior Editor Warren Alley Senior Business Manager Clifford Shelor Janice Jon es Senior Senior Associate Editor Associate Editor Miss Ellen Palmer Sponsor Mrs. Jean Blankenship Sponsor 12 Carlos Cook Senior Layout Editor Ronnie King Senior Art Editor Jane Noland Barbara Tolbert Senior Senior Class Editor Typist Margaret Young Senior Typist Janice Stimson Senior Typist Charlyne Fox Senior Typist 13 Brenda Gilman Senior Sports Editor Norman Prillaman Senior Sports Editor Margaret Ann Painter Junior Assistant Editor Richard Patterson lunior Assistant Business Manager Alberta Elkins Junior Business Secretary Theda Kay Farmer Junior Photographer Jerry Guynn Sop homore Photographer Druscilla Martin Henry Albert George Kelly Cary Sutherland Junior Class Editor Sophomore Class Editor Freshman Class Editor 8th Grade Class Editor 14 Mr. Kenneth E. Fulp, Principal Duke University, B. A. University of Virginia, M. Ed. I want to commend the staff and sponsors of this Yearbook for the fine job they have done. It takes many long hours to complete the material and put it in order for a book. They do it for only one reward, the satis- faction of a job well done. Over the past three years we have, in Pulaski High School; attempted to gradually improve the quality of our scholastic endeavors, and in that process we feel that pride in self and school will be raised on the part of students. Perhaps one evidence of that improved quality will be seen in such extra-curricular activities as this Yearbook. May this book serve to bring back to us many happy memories. It has been a pleasure to serve with you. 16 V Mr. Theodore Viars University of Virginia, B. S. Assistant Principal Secretaries 17 Miss Elizabeth Blair Vanderbilt University: B. For five years we have wandered through these halls, becoming a more closely-knit family every day. Many of the friendships which began here will en- dure for many years to come. Our memories are precious as we recall the years that have passed so swiftly. We remember how bewildered we were when we first entered these doors and how we gradually became accustomed to this new way of life. Next came the chief joy of our freshman year, that of no longer being the youngest class in school. Our sophomore year we remember well since we began to know more people and really to participate in school activities. By the time our junior year arrived, we felt more self-confident and were thrilled with our class rings. Then came the long-awaited day when we marched down the aisle during an assembly. The full realization of our being seniors hit us as we knew that it would be our responsibility to set an example for the underclassmen to follow. Our senior year has seen a whirlwind of activities. Among our projects were selling Christmas cards and magazines, as well as Class making candles to sell. We participated in these projects so that we might fulfill the dream of a class trip. There was the excite- ment of decorating the Christmas tree; Youth Day, May Day and the Junior-Senior Prom. In the all too near future, the final highlight will come — graduation night. Then we shall feel as never before the ties that bind us together as we prepare to step out into life. We wish to thank all our teachers, who have guided us over paths of higher learn- ing and deepening character through these five years. We shall always be grateful to them for their patience and understanding. We should especially like to extend our thanks to our energetic and devoted sponsors — Mrs. Miller Bushong, Miss Suzanne David, Mrs. Harry Loftus, Mrs. A1 Mode, Mrs. Richard Quesenberry, and Mrs. J. C. Totten. We leave Pulaski High with the hope that our being here has enriched the school in some small way. We hope that those who follow us will make many worthy contribu- tions to their school in the spirit of truth, loyalty, courage, and love for one’s fellow man, which is the spirit of Pulaski High School. NEWLY DESIGNED CLASS RING The design on the 1961 class ring is different from that in previous years. Therefore, this is an appropriate time to explain the symbols on the ring. On one side is a picture of the Oriole, sym- bolizing Pulaski High School, and a dogwood blossom, the state flower of Virginia. On the other side are the United States flag, the Vir- ginia flag, and Count Pulaski, symbolizing our nation, state, and community. The lamp of wis- dom separates the digits of the numerical year. On either side of the word Pulaski, one finds a dogwood blossom. On both sides of the ring are four pillars, representing the four years of high school. Encircling the words Pulaski High School is an endless and unbroken chain of friendship. 59 Junior Class Officers — Seated, Left to Right: Kaye Catron, Secretary; Linda Aust, Vice-President; Allen Jones, Treasurer. Standing: Margaret Ann Painter, President. 9 umor Cl ass Junior Class members are shown receiving stationery, sold as a class project. As distinctive upperclassmen, the Juniors look- ed forward to new privileges, new activities, and more fun for the class of ’62, and it has been an exciting year in many ways. The highlight of the year was when we re- ceived our class rings in December. We can boast because we sold the most stationery — 1,010 boxes — for the benefit of our Junior-Senior Prom. In the Christmas Can Drive competition, the Juniors came in second. Beauty also reigned in our class when Kay Stuart was named maid of honor in the Miss P. H. S. Contest. We are proud of our achievements and also our sponsors: Mrs. Kathryn Brockman, Mrs. Johnsie Faircloth, Mrs. Billie Farmer, Miss Emma Galli- more, Mrs. Lelia Jackson, Miss Ellen Palmer, Miss Lola Robinson, Miss Ruth Simpson. 60 Peyton Alley Alene Anderson Charles Aust Linda Aust George Bageant Darrell Barker Patricia Bocock Philip Baker Terry Blair Ethel Brookman junior Class Bonnie Barnette Linda Bassett Barbara Bentley Clara Ann Bentley Jerry Branscome William Breedlove Judy Brinkley Dianne Brockmeyer 61 Joe Bryson Linda Carrico Linda Burchett Cynthia Carroll Dianne Burton Kaye Catron Jack Byrd Harold Childress junior Betty Bryson Etta Carlton Carol Ann Clark Sherman Cain Virlen Chrisley Mike Clark Mary Sue Collins Larry Cook Buddy Cox Joann Cox 62 Charles Crawford Jay Dawson Delzora Crisp Skipper Duke Donald Crowder David Duncan Class William Cox Bob Davis Dennis Edwards Jess Crumbley Violet East Alberta Elkins Mary Ellis Janice Freeman Donna Farley Phil Freeman 63 Martha Graham Gale Grantham Barbara Guynn Norma Hagee Loretta Hancock Dianne Harrell Curtis Hawkins Rita Hawks Freddie Hill Martha Hill Eddie Himmelman Patsy Hodge Ronnie B. Our school had been brightened by a new coat of paint. More color was added by one of the year’s highlights — the Miss P. H. S. contest. In this activity we were ably represented by Judy Massie, Marie Worrell, Charlotte Smith, and Cyn- thia Vaughan. The May Day activities added to the already exciting year of work. Each new generation must stand on its own feet and preserve these freedoms. The freedoms we enjoy through the American Way have a high price and must be earned over and over. W.
