Special R ecognition Qene Ho6ac6 For five years. Gene Hoback served as a member of the Pulaski High School faculty, devoting much hard work to our athletic department and expressing sincere interest in its growth and improvement. As any good coach, he earned the respect of the boys who worked with him as well as that of the other students. After re- signing as a faculty member he earned even deeper admiration by returning during his spare time, to help our teams, through the illness of Coach Ed Rockwell. In addition at many other times he generously offered his needed services. This year, Mr. Hoback has served as a member of the Pulaski County School Board, representing the Pulaski district. He was elected by the board to represent it at the Virginia Education Association. It is only fitting that we should now give this small token of our thanks, appreciation, and deep admira- tion to Mr. Gene Hoback. He will long be remembered for his many services to the community and here at school remain in our hearts and memories as a distinguished coach. 9

I One sees her coming to school— neat, unhurried, smil- ing; One sees her leaving, sometimes late, sometimes later, j after school, bandbox fresh— neat, unhurried, smil- I ing. One would not guess what such serenity can hide. The boy whose shoes were bro ken and tom does not j shout abroad his “thank you” to the lady who found a new pair for him, who without embarrassing his shy timidity brought the shoes someone needed to give to the boy who needed the gift, ministering to the need of both. The girl whose heart was broken and torn cannot ex- press the silent “thank you” to the lady who listened uncritically, and with serious, mature wisdom led her to understanding of herself and her problem, freeing her to solve it. ' Graduated friends, whose need of Pulaski High School began with their acquisition of a diploma, seldom return to tell of the innumerable recommendations, ' transcripts of credit, college and job applications I which mean, sometimes, daily bread and the course i of life itself. j This and these are the substance of her days. One recognizes the praise of state officials, last year’s j evaluation committee, and colleagu es in her field I for her department, created from rudimentary be- ' ginnings under her guidance. One hears respectful comment from former stxidents, fellow faculty members, leaders and members of her church; one remembers numerous speeches to explain “Why” to questioning parents, friends, and —yes— critics of Pulaski High School. To express honor and gratitude, one considers similes, metaphors: Truthful in estimating human weaknesses as an un- retouched photograph; Tactful in reminding an erring one and correcting him as the final finished portrait. Gentle— the brown velvet eyes of a doe are not softer, kinder; Strong in her convictions— the plowhorse’s muscles straining to break stubborn sod are not more pur- poseful . . . If ever the substance of words is inadequate, it is here. With love and unspoken thanksgiving for one who in- spires students, friends, and fellow workers to the highest that life can become, the staflF and sponsors dedicate this 1960 edition of the Oriole to Mrs. John Sanders.
