The Senior Class of ’60 Now leaves you in the hands of others. Yet we do not depart empty-handed. We are taking a part of you As we leave a part of us behind. Our footsteps will re-echo Through these corridors When those who are left have gone. Our lives are united as if a scarlet ribbon, Winding through our days, had bound us In knowledge, understanding, and love. This bond is made stronger by All that we have found together. It may wear thin in time but never break. We are as brothers and sisters With a home for which We have cheered, and fought, and worked. We are the children of Pulaski High School — Charlena Sue Wright 3 5 6 A symbol Exciting festivities Of the spirit that is Rewarding efforts Pulaski High School An ever abiding token ' Yesterday . . . Today . . . Tomorrow Continuing traditions. Special R ecognition Qene Ho6ac6 For five years. Gene Hoback served as a member of the Pulaski High School faculty, devoting much hard work to our athletic department and expressing sincere interest in its growth and improvement. As any good coach, he earned the respect of the boys who worked with him as well as that of the other students. After re- signing as a faculty member he earned even deeper admiration by returning during his spare time, to help our teams, through the illness of Coach Ed Rockwell. In addition at many other times he generously offered his needed services. This year, Mr. Hoback has served as a member of the Pulaski County School Board, representing the Pulaski district. He was elected by the board to represent it at the Virginia Education Association. It is only fitting that we should now give this small token of our thanks, appreciation, and deep admira- tion to Mr. Gene Hoback. He will long be remembered for his many services to the community and here at school remain in our hearts and memories as a distinguished coach. 9 I Mrs. ofin Sanarrs I i 10 I One sees her coming to school— neat, unhurried, smil- ing; One sees her leaving, sometimes late, sometimes later, j after school, bandbox fresh— neat, unhurried, smil- I ing. One would not guess what such serenity can hide. The boy whose shoes were bro ken and tom does not j shout abroad his “thank you” to the lady who found a new pair for him, who without embarrassing his shy timidity brought the shoes someone needed to give to the boy who needed the gift, ministering to the need of both. The girl whose heart was broken and torn cannot ex- press the silent “thank you” to the lady who listened uncritically, and with serious, mature wisdom led her to understanding of herself and her problem, freeing her to solve it. ' Graduated friends, whose need of Pulaski High School began with their acquisition of a diploma, seldom return to tell of the innumerable recommendations, ' transcripts of credit, college and job applications I which mean, sometimes, daily bread and the course i of life itself. j This and these are the substance of her days. One recognizes the praise of state officials, last year’s j evaluation committee, and colleagu es in her field I for her department, created from rudimentary be- ' ginnings under her guidance. One hears respectful comment from former stxidents, fellow faculty members, leaders and members of her church; one remembers numerous speeches to explain “Why” to questioning parents, friends, and —yes— critics of Pulaski High School. To express honor and gratitude, one considers similes, metaphors: Truthful in estimating human weaknesses as an un- retouched photograph; Tactful in reminding an erring one and correcting him as the final finished portrait. Gentle— the brown velvet eyes of a doe are not softer, kinder; Strong in her convictions— the plowhorse’s muscles straining to break stubborn sod are not more pur- poseful . . . If ever the substance of words is inadequate, it is here. With love and unspoken thanksgiving for one who in- spires students, friends, and fellow workers to the highest that life can become, the staflF and sponsors dedicate this 1960 edition of the Oriole to Mrs. John Sanders. This yearbook should serve in general, three purposes. First, it should be a storehouse of pleasant memories for the students. Ten or fifteen years from now you will turn through these pages and each picture will start a chain reaction of memories which will enable you to relive part of your past. Second, it should portray to the general public a picture story of what goes on in our school. Most yearbooks give little attention to the academic area of school life. Yet, in truth, the academic occupies the majority of the students’ time. We hope to have made some progress in that direction. Finally, it should provide the students with a project on which they can bring to bear their individual talents and have the opportunity to create something that is distinctive and worthwhile. I think all three purposes have been achieved through the dedicated efforts of Miss Palmer, Mrs. Blankenship and the yearbook staff of 1960. Congratulations on a job well done. 16 t fieodore Viars University of Virginia, B.S. Assistant Principal MRS. DEWEY WILSON East Tennessee State: B.S. Mechanical Drawing You come— rain or shine, sick or healthy, You go— to all our activities. You help— with lessons, love, or life. You hinder— our trip downward. You lead— ever upward that we may be leaders. You follow— when inspiration moves a student. You praise— when we deserve it. You criticize— when we need it. You’re silent— when we set goals impossible to reach. You talk— and talk, when we lose hope. You are everything— a teacher, a doctor, a mother, a pal, a ruler. Because of this we wish to thank you for five of the most wonderful years of our lives. asses 4 Five years ago we entered Pulaski High School through doors that opened a new world of learning, playing, and companionship. Little did we realize at that time how much the days we spent here would mean to us in the final moments that we are as one— in classes, activities, and achievements. Some of our friends have gone away to other schools while others have come to fill the gap. These we have taken to our hearts and we hope they have been nourished by Pulaski High as we have. The memories that have been stored in our minds are priceless for they shall lighten many burdens— illumine dark hours, if we but bother to take them from their shelves, dust them off, and restore them in their rightful places. Memory will be our link with our old friends and serve as stories to be handed down to the youths that will take P. H. S. as their home. Among our memories of our last year on “The Hill” are the first day we marched into the auditorium and the thrill of being really seniors, tlie grandeur of the Miss P. H. S. Contest with the crowning of a senior girl as queen, giving the gift of a huge decorated tree to the underclassmen, the work we put into the dream of a class trip, our own Youth Day when we finally got to “wield the rod” and the soon— too soon— to be realized dream of graduation. We feel greatly honored that the 1960 Oriole has used our class colors- red and white— as its theme basis. It is our belief that this is the first year that any Senior Class has been so remembered. We have been led and guided by wonderfully understanding teachers throughout our high school career and in this last year we want to express our gratitude and respect to our most able and hard-working sponsors— Mrs. Miller Bushong, Miss Suzanne David, Mrs. Harry Loftus, Miss Mayme K. McCoy, Miss Ellen Palmer, and Mrs. J. C. Totten. Pulaski High, we leave to you our pride, our love, and our loyalty. May you always be a symbol to future youths as you have been to the Class of ’60. The Junior year has been the most exciting year we have had in high school. This year we are upperclassmen; we received our newly designed class rings. We presented a Junior Class play entitled “Brother Goose,” which was a big success. Mr. Lindsey’s homeroom won the March of Dimes Drive with an average of two dollars and fifty-cents per pupil. The Juniors honored the Seniors with the annual Junior-Senior Prom. I am sure this year as Juniors will never be forgotten and we look with great anticipation to being Seniors. The class sponsors who have done a fine job are the following: Miss Alzie Lee Barnett, Mrs. Billie Farmer, Miss Edna Frye, Miss Emma Gallimore, Mr. Henry Lindsey, Miss Lola Robinson, Mrs. Frances Shorter and Miss Ruth Simpson. i 60 MKIA ' IU.K AXDKHSON AW HFA ll JERRY BISIIOR PECC;V BLAXKF S[1IR JANE BOAN FRANK BOM) MARTHA BOWYER JUNE BRAMMER LEON BRANSCOME BOBBY BRAH ' ION CEARA BROWN SANDRA BURCHETT NEECIA BUR ' l’ON BRUCE CASSEEl. 61 CONN ' IK CASSKLL CllAKl’IX JACK IF. H. S. We have experienced many enjoyable events which will be remembered throughout our lives. We shall always remember the fun and excitement we had working on our homecoming float which won honorable mention. We were well represented in the Miss P. H. S. Contest by six very attractive girls— Kaye Catron, Janet Kirkner, Carolyn Lane, Dee Ann Rooker, Burley Jean Semones, and Kay Stuart. This year was the boys’ first opportunity to participate in varsity football, varsity basket- ball, and wrestling. Those that took part in these sports did a very fine job. Classes this year have been more difficult but we are now beginning to see how im- portant it is that we study hard and learn as much as we can. Many new doors have been opened to us this year. We are beginning to realize how much we must treasure our years at P. H. S. and are looking forward with great anticipa- tion to our remaining years here on the hill. Our sincere thanks and deepest appreciation are extended to our very capable spon- sors: Mrs. Nesbit, Mrs. Wallace, Mrs. Dugger, Mrs. Kegley, Miss King, Mrs. Newman, Mrs. Bird, Mrs. Groseclose, and Mr. Stroup. With its color and sounds it has added to ball games, pep rallies, concerts and parades. It has represented Pulaski High School at Annual District Festivals. “The Band Blabber” was started this year, giving news of interest to the local band members. Another addition to our school is a Dance Band, sponsored by Mr. Harris. Members are the fol- lowing: Jane Noland, Carole Robinson, Eddie Um- berger, Mike Clark, saxophone; Bob Thompson, Tolley Hurst, C. T. Montgomery, Clara Brown, cornet; Eddie Stinson, Byron Spencer, Richard Agee, trombones; Mack V ilson, Charles Crawford, drums; Rebecca Repass, piano; Bill Quesenberry, string bass. Participation and growing skill in music are joy- ful and satisfying experience which lift band mem- bers to a higher level of satisfaction than is provided by most of life: therefore, it increases the sum total of human happiness. It provides them with a means of self expression, and gives them a worthwhile use for their leisure time. Our band has remained faithful and tried very hard at all times to represent us to its best ability. We would like to thank Mr. Harris for the fine job he has done with the band this year. 107 Left to right, first row: Barbara Stinson, Barbara Tolbert, Carolyn Lane.
