Oriole VOLUME NUMBER XXXVIII PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF PULASKI HIGH SCHOOL Pulaski, Virginia MARIE PHIBBS Editor RONALD PATTERSON Business Manager ♦ «, ©ur OUR GOLDEN HOURS Time is precious, I’ve been told ; And this is very true, For when we look back on the hours, They form a golden view. The fallen sand denotes the past — Our memories gone by. The world has been our plaything — Our aspirations high. Wisdom is our tool of work. Knowledge is our gain. Fun is had by everyone. Conformity is all in vain. School days are our best ones. The world is carefree and gay. The students are the actors, Our school life is the play. And now the golden sand Does sift and fall away The hours have passed to eternity The dawn awakes a new day. by Nancy Akers 2 (lolden jMour 3 ere bit fnere 4 plljat die did pil|g die diere fyere 5 In highlighting this important era of our lives, we, the Oriole Staff of 1959, consider it a distinct privilege to honor one of our devoted teachers. Our lives have been enriched because of her real love of teaching and her genuine in- terest in the youth today. Her unique ability in the field of mathematics combined with her experiences in a variety of activities that include senior events, student coun- cil work, future teachers groups, professional or- ganizations, and contributions to the annual staff in the capacity of the business sponsor make her a real inspiration and admirable leader for us to follow. I believe that the first 18 years of a person’s life, 12 of which are spent in school, are as important, if not more important, than any other period in life. During this period of life a student should be engaged in activities that will permit him to use the skills that he learns to live a full life. A full life must include development of the intellect, development of moral and special values, development of the physical body and development of skill in getting along with other people successfully. We hope that our school gives the proper emphasis to the development of each aspect of the student’s life. This publication will give one an over-all view of the activities at Pulaski High. However, we must keep in mind that for the purpose of a yearbook, the social aspect is always emphasized. Also, this publication can be view- ed as an example of what can be accomplished by many students using the many skills which they have learned, in co-operation with others, to bring a project to completion. I should like to take this opportunity to thank the faculty and the student body for their co-operation and understanding during my first year here as Principal. Any- one who looks through this yearbook will understand why I consider it a high privilege to be a part of Pulaski High School. THEODORE .T. VIARS MRS. As Seniors of 1959, we look in retrospect to our past school years, remembering our varied experiences which we shall always cherish as fond memories, especially over those in our Senior year. Many events have crowned this our Senior year at Pulaski High — the thrills we enjoyed through having won first prize in the Home- coming Float Parade, attending the Virginia- Maryland game at Charlottesville, decorating the Christmas tree in our lobby, our Youth Government Day, our Banquet, o ur Prom, dances and all our other days of work and play. We realize only too soon that our days were but few on “The Hill”. But not until we receive our diplomas will we become aware that our footsteps will be only echoes in the halls of P.H.S. We leave to P.H.S., and to all her students who follow us, our devotion, our loyalty, and our pride. Our constant hope will be that our School has been enriched by our having been here because we are finer people and we are better prepared for the future years through the untiring efforts of our capable faculty and from the knowledge instilled in us by them and from their high ideals set forth as shining lights along our pathways of education. May those who follow us continue to bring recognition and honor to our school and may they always uphold the tradition and ideals which make P.H.S. outstanding. We express our deepest gratitude to our most able and understanding sponsors, Miss Mayme K. McCoy, Mrs. J. C. Totten, Miss Emma Gallimore, Mrs. Harry Loftus, and Mrs. Miller Bushong. Our sincere appreciation goes to Mr. Ken- neth Fulp, Principal, Mr. Ted Viars, Assist- ant Principal, and to Mrs. John Sanders, Guidance Director. 28 Nancy Ann Akers Nancy A child’s storybook, A magnolia filled Southern garden.
