Published by the students of PULASKI HIGH SCHOOL Pulaski, Virginia NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY-EIGHT FOREWORD With the fulfillment of a school year there is usually some special event of the year we wish to remember. The year 1 957-58, however, holds not one but several outstanding features which we do not want to forget. With these events in mind we have given special recognition to the graduating Class of 1958. The Senior Class is the first to graduate from our twelve year system. This year marks the completion of our school build- ing program, housing the largest enrollment in our history. The growth in the past twelve years has made us a Group I school for the first time. Now we are presenting to you the largest and, we hope, the most enjoyable annual of your school life — the 1957-58 Oriole. 3 CONTENTS SENIORS AT SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION CLASSES ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS FEATURES ADVERTISEMENTS IN RECOGNITION From 1939 to 1957 Miss Elizabeth Painter was a teacher in Pulaski High School. Illness in her family forced her to retire from teaching. We wish to show our appreciation for her years of service as a teacher, not only in P.H.S. but in Virginia. We will always remember her ability to make literature a living subject to us. Her enthusiasm for baseball and the faculty basketball game made her a part of our school life. We wish to thank her for many years of service and to wish her many happy years to come. 6 THROUGH THESE DOORS 7 Little did we realize when we entered the first grade that we would ever be studying Physics. 8 KNOWLEDGE... IS A SEARCH FOR ' CCGCZ 9 10 12 VICTORY AND DEFEAT IB DELIGHTFUL MOMENTS OF 15 IN THE YEARS TO COME, MAY THE ■ Will we ever forget the many hours we spent making our float appear so lovely, and how proud we felt to see it leading the parade. What a wonderful day, the football game, the tour of the University, and last of all the perfect ending — food. How beautiful we all felt participating in the Miss P. H. S. Contest, and the fun we had helping each other to look our prettiest. 16 4 help to ma ke THIS DEDICATION In carrying out the theme of our Oriole this year, it is most appropriate that we honor two persons who have played a major role in our school lives. Twelve years ago, they moved to our community at the time many of the present Seniors were entering the first grade. A guiding light in our school, devoted parents in their home, outstanding leaders in the community, and active members in their professional organi- zations, makes these two persons worthy of our recognition. In addition to their many duties as principal, spon- sor, and teacher, they have always been willing to listen to our problems and give us a second chance. It has been their goal at all times to provide edu- cational opportunities for all the boys and girls of this community. Our school lives have been enriched not only mentally but also spiritually under their devoted leadership. We, the Staff, proudly dedicate the 1958 Oriole to Mr. and Mrs. William R. Garland. 20 21 MR. W. R. GARLAND Principal Another school year has passed. With the passing of the days each of you has grown in many ways. Along with your growth has been the growth of our school. Growth and progress require participation, work, respon- sibility, and co-operation. We will progress in proportion to how well each of us does these things. Your real worth to yourself and to society will depend upon what you have done with the education which has been offered you. Whether you will remain but a small fraction of what you might have been, or whether you will exceed even your own fondest dream of success will depend, within limits, upon yourself. I have faith and confidence in you as young people to use what you have learned in a manner which will reflect honor and credit upon you, your school, and your com- munity. My wish for each of you is that you will enjoy to the fullest degree a healthy, whole- some, and happy life. W. R. Garland MR. J. S. FOWLER Assistant Principal MRS. I 29 We, the Seniors of 1958, the first class to graduate under the five-year plan, leave our Alma-Mater a year older than the past graduates of P.H.S. and, we hope, a year wiser. Some of us have reached a cherished goal; others, another step in achieving and ful- filling our ultimate ambition. We have completed the foundation of our education; and as we go forward to explore our unknown futures, we will be able to face human problems sensibly and courageously, always mindful of the education that we have had and of the opportunity of having that education. From our first and finally to our twelfth year, we have experienced trial, error, and triumph, happy and sorrowful moments, studying, playing, learning which all combine to give us the most triumphant moment of our lives — our graduation. But sha ll we close the door to learning now? Surely not, for we must always look up, never back. We wonder where our happy years have gone — may there be many more always holding a lesson, and a work and a dream. We leave to you, Pulaski High, our loyalty, our love, and our pride that you are ours. May you always be a shining symbol of all that is fine to the future youths who climb The Hill to success. Our deepest gratitude is expressed to the wonderful leadership and teaching of Miss Mayme McCoy, Mrs. Bessie Totten, Mrs. Isabel Jordan, and Mr. Franklin Davis. The officers of the class of 1958 are: Larry Morris, Treasurer; Sandra Ledford, Secretary; Bob Lockett, Vice- President; Curtis Hollins, President. 30 BETTY CLETIS AKERS Cletis Manners, not gold, is woman ' s best adornment. Shyness and bewilderment soon vanished. The enthusiasm of our spon- sors, Mrs. Boyd and Mrs. Bonville, was catch- ing. We soon earned the spotlight by winning first prize for our float in the homecoming parade. Our campaign speeches for election of class officers were declared most successful, and proved that we were on our way to being one of the best eighth grade classes Pulaski has ever had. We are looking forward to participating in Stunt Day and the many other activities at P.H.S. We, the staff of 1957-’58, wish to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have helped make the ORIOLE a reality. Especially do we wish to thank our sponsors who advised and worked along with us throughout the year. Our photographer, Mr. Kent, deserves our heartfelt thanks for the work he has done, not only this year but in the years past. We also wish to thank the Southwest Times and Theda’s Studio for furnishing us with pictures to help complete the story of our school year. Last but not least we acknowledge those people without whom it would be very difficult to publish this yearbook — our advertisers! 162 -v f c.y v. j o ' Property of Pulaski County Library 60 West Third St. Pulaski, VA 24301
