THE 1957 Oriole VOLUME NUMBER XXXVI Published by THE STUDENTS OF PULASKI HIGH SCHOOL PULASKI, VIRGINIA DAVID ALTIZER, LYNDA ROOP RUTH SEAGLE, GEORGE GALLOWAY Co-Editors Business Managers • • • School is many things to each of us. If we had had the time to ask the students at Pulaski High, we would no doubt have gotten a different answer from each. Rather than do that we have attempted in the ' 57 Oriole to show you many different phases of School life at Pulaski High. We realize that we have omitted many events because no book could include all of the things a thousand students have done in nine months. We do sincerely hope that this 1957 Oriole will be a happy reminder of this school year. In picturing the activities of our school we wish to recognize one who has taken active part in all phases of school life at P. H. S. Our school calendar might ' well be her calendar, for seldom does she miss a school event. She leads a busy life as teacher of Mathematics, sponsor of the Student Council, and the Beta Club. Her duties are endless, but then so are her energies and interest in our school. With this already busy life she has not neglected her professional organization. She has served in many capacities. Last summer she attended the National Education Association Convention at Denver, Colorado. In April she was installed as president of the Pul aski County Education Association. It is also important to add that she contributes much to her com- munity as a loyal and faithful church worker. The Staff proudly dedicates the 1957 ORIOLE to Miss Emma Gcllimore in recognition of her unselfish devotion to Pulaski High School. 3 r l m ci v 1 a i e Dear ole P. H. S. proudly we sing Of the glories thy name doth bring. Hallowed are thy walls, Widespread thy fame. To thee we lift our voice. Thy works proclaim. Hail Alma Mater, we sing to thee. Thy name within our hearts Will treasured be. As the days go by our thoughts will turn And give thee the praise for all, We ' ve learned. Garland has served as our principal, he has led our school through the rapid increase in enroll- ment, the transition from the eleven-year to the twelve-year system, and the great change in the physical environment. In addition to these major challenges, he has inspired us to keep pace with the great strides in curriculum building, athletic competition, and student activities. We express our deepest gratitude to Mr. Garland for the great contribution he has made to our school and community through his years of leadership at Pulaski High School. 10 CDur JAMES FOWLER As a school grows in its many phases, it must increase in administra- tive personnel. Mr. James S. Fowler is serving his second term as assistant principal of Pulaski High School. He is a great asset to our school and has faithfully executed his duties in an efficient and understanding manner. Our sincere thanks go to Mr. Fowler for his part in making our school life successful. -Olteiitant principal A school always takes pride in the fine achievements of its graduates. Our two attrac- tive and efficient secretaries are 1956 grad- uates of Pulaski High School. Miss Genevieve ' Akers and Miss Mary McDaniel have served us in a most amiable way, and we are justly proud of our graduates in action in the offices of Pulaski High School. H. S. in September with the joyous realization that we were seniors at last. We proved to ourselves and to others that strength can lie in small numbers. We sold over 500 spectators badges bearing our school colors and name to be worn to athletic events; we tied for first prize for our float entered in the Home- coming Parade and we won second prize in the school Stunt Day, and also participated in the School Play. The smallness of our class has drawn us into a closer bond of friendship and a keener sense of responsibility to our class and to our school. Our classes, teachers, clubs, sports, parties, and friends are all segments of our happy days at P. H. S. Th ese among many others have aided us in preparing for our future lives and in instill- ing in our hearts memories that we will always hold dear. In leaving P. H. S. we give our thanks to all of our teachers who so ably guided us in our classes and in our extra curricular activities and to Mr. Garland our principal who has been to us both friend and administrator during our days as students. An important part of every day at Pulaski High School is our lunch period, and the most discussed item of that period is our meal in the cafeteria. We are most fortunate in having a fine cafeteria staff. You know the saying: The Show must go on! Our workers in the cafeteria operate on the theory that The Meal must be served. Never has there been a day that we were without a well planned and delicious meal. Our sincere appreciation goes to these efficient and thoughtful ladies! Our Ci u J t o d Land They ore: Leon Clark, Leta Robinson, Bernice Williamson, David Hale. Our school is our home for a good part of our lives. Just as a home requires good house- keeping so does our school building and grounds. Can you imagine how much work it takes to keep a home in order that has more than 1000 people living in it? That ' s the gi- gantic job of our custodians. Day by day they carry out their tasks in a most cooperative and commendable way. To you, the keepers of our great big house, we say, Thank you. 106 107 YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER FOR OVER 25 YEARS photographer Congratulations to the CLASS OF ' 5 7 BUILDING MATERIALS OF ALL KINDS Compliments of WALLACE ' S SMARTWEAR Bageant Chevrolet Sales Company, Inc. 400 Washington Avenue, N.
