i VOLUME NUMBER XXIII Published By THE STUDENTS OF IP D L AS IK II IP II 0 IP fCPC € IL PULASKI, VIRGINIA ALLEN SUTPHIN EDITOR-IN-CHIEF BOBBY BUTLER BUSINESS MANAGER PREFA CE the last year in which the high school will be in its present location. Since school life is made up of much more than a building we sincerely hope that this book will serve as a reminder of the many happy years spent in P.H.S. on Third Street. We rejoice with you who will have the opportunity of attending the new P.H.S. May you find much there to enrich your school life, but hold on to the fine traditions established in Pulaski High School. DEDICATION its theme the moving from the old to the new high school, we feel it is appropriate to recog- nize one who in a large part has been responsible for this progress. Fifteen years ago, upon coming to Pulaski County, he set as his goal the building of an adequate school housing program. This year marks the completion of that goal which consumed years of planning and work. As we enter into a beautiful new building next fall let us not forget the man who counted neither time nor setbacks in striving to give us a school system of which we can be proud. It is with pride and appreciation that we dedicate the 1954 Oriole ' to our Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Frank J. Critzer. First row: Helen Manuel, Miss Emma Gallimore, Rodney Runyon, Patsy Jennings, Carolyn Shinault, Beverly Pearce, Jimmy Shepherd, Louise Harrell, Dana Whitt, Judy Owen, Janie Aust. Second row: Donald Hawkins, Curtis Morris, Alien Sutphin, Gene French, Dick Nichols, Donald Swain, Jack Morris, Butch Patton, Tex Boggs, Bobby Umberger. The Student Council is a cooperative association which helps plan and direct student activities. The Council is composed of the class presidents and duly elected representatives from each class. Carolyn Shinault, president, and Beverley Pearce, vice-president, were elected by the student body. Rodney Runyon, secretary, Patsy Jennings, treasurer, and James Shepherd, chaplain, were elected by the Council. Miss Emma Gallimore serves as faculty sponsor. This year the Council sponsored the following activities: prepared a handbook for all eighth graders, bought materials for and fixed weekly and special bulletin boards, made song sheets for all homerooms, bought three records monthly and furnished music in the gym for dancing, planned Homecoming Parade and entered a float in it, arranged monthly religious assemblies at churches, used offerings to make special gifts to the Mary Montgomery and Fairview Homes, coordinated club efforts in having a successful Christmas Formal, prepared baskets for 26 families at Christmas, helped with Junior Red Cross drive, raised $210 for March of Dimes, sponsored a candidate in the Miss P.H.S. Contest, encouraged proper cleanliness for cafeteria, gym, etc., nominated a candidate for State SCA President, sent three delegates to the State Convention, furnished six secretaries for group discussions at Convention, sponsored annual Talent Show, encouraged good sportsmanship, publicized school events in a weekly column and special articles in Southwest Times, and enjoyed a spring fellowship outing. All projects and activities are the work of our students and faculty. The Council appreciates the sincere support it has received this year. SIX oua BO 15 BY BUTLER ALLEN SUTPHIN Business Manager Editor-in-Chief The Annual Staff proudly pre- sents the 1954 Oriole. We pause to think of the many students who have graduated before us, sensing that they have the same love for our school that we hold so deeply in our hearts. Here we have studied, danced, played, experienced trials, and had enjoyable moments for four years. As we leave our school and the oncoming classes move to the new high school, we have ended an era in the high school life of our town. We leave our best wishes for success and happiness to all students who will attend the new high school in coming years, and may they realize the pleasures, joys, and benefits of high school life as fully as we do. We deeply appreciate the guidance and advice given to us by our principal, Mr. Garland, our class sponsors, Miss Mayme McCoy and Mr. Vic Kreiter. We also leave our sincere appreciation to our other senior teachers: Mrs. Jordan, Mrs. Totten and Mr. Voulangas, and to all our high school teachers without whose help and guidance the realization of graduation may not have been reached. jourteen seniors CARL SHELBURNE ARMBRlSTER 1 ' Carl Intellectual, and likely to succeed, Carl is capable indeed. We applaud our 1953 football squad for making a much better showing on the gridiron than was anticipated of them. This comeback was greatly due to the capable leadership of co-captains Gene Via and Rodney Runyon and to the high team spirit and determination of the boys. Our team ended its season with a 2 win, 7 loss, and I tie record: however, this is not a true pic- ture of the exciting games and hard playing our boys displayed. Our equipment was good, our coaches the best, and our boys strong-hearted and courageous. From this spirit will again come a winning year. sixty-eight j. v. football The J.V.
