U u ’ ‘£ i m y aM ANTON WALLNER Business Manager Always laughWg, alw s in a hurry considerate, original, dependable, determined each year to have the best high school annual in the state — this is our Miss McCoy. Having been with this graduating class of 1951, through our four years at Pulaski High School, she has not only been a teacher but also has been one of us. Her fun-loving kept us happy. Her annuals brought us joy, Shr rated high with students, This May me A ' . McCoy. MISS MAYME KATHERINE McCOY Editorial Sponsor for the past four years m ■ ■ 2 HE VALUE of little things which people do is often overlooked. In review- ing the span of thirty years we are reminded of those significant persons who have contributed their guidance, knowledge, and time but who have not received creditable acknowledgment for their endeavors in compiling a yearbook. These per- sons we call sponsors. We, the 1951 Oriole Staff, seek to bring into reality the high aspirations and ideals of all the sponsors of the past by dedicating our yearbook to Miss Mayme Katherine McCoy and to Mr. Foy Aust, who we feel are representative of all the gualities of foregoing sponsors. MR. FOY AUST Business Sponsor for the past twelve years A Christian gentleman, fair-minded, energetic, and always there when we need sound advice and during his fourteen years at Pulaski High School he has endeared himself to the students and other Pulaskians through his many fine qualities. His unfailing judgment has been a constant guide to those who have worked with him. His sense of humor is unexcelled. He retrieved the things we lost. Actor, poet, orator — This is our Foy Aust. lour We seek to honor Mrs. Harry Hall as the founder of the Oriole in 1921 and to pay tribute to the wisdom and foresight she exercised in such a contribution to our school and community. Feeling incapable of setting forth in words an expre ssion which would be fitting and appropriate, we call upon the words of Emerson, The reward of a thing well done, is to have done it. MRS. HARRY HALL ■ ■ ■ EALIZING the trials which beset those in the past who undertook the publication of our yearbook, The Oriole, and in appreciation of their efforts which played no small part in its success through the thirty years, we, the 1951 Staff, have endeavored in a small way to portray in picture through the forth coming pages some of the history of this traditional P. H. S. publication. Without rhyme or rhythm do we make this portrayal and attempt through reproduction to illustrate to a certain extent the cover designs and page layouts of past Orioles so that comparisons may be made of the older books with those of more modern days. We seek to bring to the attention of our readers that during the past decade the Oriole has won outstanding acclaim in competition with other schools in the state of Virginia. In the years 1941, ' 42, ' 45, and ' 48 our yearbook won top honors while ' 43, ' 44, ' 46, and 49 received second place honors. When the history of our times is seen in retrospect may our posterity evaluate the 1951 Oriole in its depicting those phases of student life ' which develop honesty, co-operation, re- sponsibility, integrity, good sportsmanship, and Pulaski High School as emblematic representa- tion of all those qualities which are becoming to us as students. five i:K TEMfME PAINTW Jr. E LllAiB -Chief p jphold that everlasting spirit which preva pd among Jiae students of Pulaski we, the 1951 Or oleJ Staff, endeavor to yT5u an outstanding portrayal of your everyday 3ugh picturls and words. our high st aim thatlthis Oriole will instill . |vou a gsting remembrance qleasure and at the same time to receive klgnest. esileVi annals of Pulaski Hiqh School. TOTTEN HE STUDENT COUNCIL is a strong and active organization which makes our school more democratic through student participation. All club presidents, class presidents and students from the 6th and 7th grades are represented. Some of the activities the council sponsored directly are: Homecoming parade; dedi- cation of plagues to the memory of former teachers; use of the public address system at games; religious assemblies; aid to the Salvation Army and Welfare Department by filling Christmas stockings and collecting toys; tuning of pianos and buying records; a party for the Freshmen; Christmas cards to former students now in service; March of Dimes; Talent Show; and the Farmer ' s Ball. Indirectly, the Council has shifted responsibilities to different groups and organizations such as having the Freshman Class support the campaign for safety for Thanksgiving Holidays, Sophomore Class Campaign for reducing tardies, with prizes given the winners by the Council, the Junior Class directed Stunt Day, Junior Hi-Y accepted responsibility of the flag, clubs decorated the bulletin board by turns, arranged assemblies to promote better sportsmanship, clean-up week, and at the suggestion of the Council, the Beta Club presented a new flag. Student-Faculty co-operation influenced greatly the success of this organization. eight MR. WILLIAM R. The Pep Club is an off-spring of the Girls ' Monogram Club, with the backing of the student body, and has really put pep into our cheering section. There was no limit to their energy and no task too difficult for them as they busily gathered boxes for bonfires and decorated for dances before the games. The club was also responsible for the football programs which were sold by members before the game. The purpose of the club is to maintain, uphold and promote good sportsmanship, under the leadership of their fine coach, Vic Kreiter. The boys took in new members after the football season, by initiating them in a gay, but rugged manner. The Monogram members sold candy at the basketball games and as a project had squad pictures made to be put up in the gym. They ordered orange and black jackets and sweaters. The officers were: Jim Mabry, president; Gene Nunn, vice-president: and Bill Lester, secretary and treasurer. fifty-two Z7c Girls ' Monogram Club ; HE MONOGRAM CLUB is composed of fourteen lettermen, who have gone through plenty of hard work and sacrifice to be able to wear the school monogram. The monogram is worn with pride by all members and shows the service they give the school. They wear the monograms not only because they participated in athletics but because they have come through as good losers as well as winners. The officers were: Iris Carper, president; Joan Ashley, vice-president; Margaret Gregory, secretary; and Betty Jo Walters, insurer. The sponsor was Miss Ruth Simpson. The Girls Monogram spon ctfed the decorating of the football field. Initiation was held for new members after basketball season. Varsity Basketball Although the 1950 Orio ' es ended their season with 3 wins, one tie and 5 losses they proved, that despite injuries, they were capable of giving anyone a good ball game. With only five lettermen returning, Coach Vic Kreiter had his work cut out for him; bad luck took over and for the rest of the season injuries to key men hampered Coach Kreiter from fielding a winning ball club. We should be proud of the fight and determination which our boys displayed on the gridiron this past season and of the coaches who spent many hours working with them in an effort to produce a winning team. We don ' t pretend to be athletic experts, because our job is to manufa cture high quality textile products. But as sporting fans we think it would be safe to say that an athletic champion is the result of all these fine qualities. We know that it has taken a combination of great leadership, manufacturing know-how, careful planning, employee loyalty, and skilled teamwork to make Burlington Mills a champion in the textile industry. The Company ' s many accomplishments and progressive growth during the past 27 years are well known. We are proud of this record and equally proud of our 32,000 employees who have worked together with real team spirit as members of the Burlington team. It ' s a fact that Burlington ' s fine fabrics, hosiery and other textile products are truly Woven Into the Life of America — just as every Burlington plant is woven into the life of its own community.
