MR. EDWARD JENNINGS Mr. Jennings came to Pulaski High School as assistant coach in September 1947. His leadership, sense of humor, and ability as a teacher established him as a fair- minded person in every respect. He seemed to hold to the theory that to have friends one must be a friend. He was ours. MRS. LUTHER FARRIS Sunny a most appropriate name for one who brought sunshine to our school and into our lives. She was always understanding, gay, and helpful and on all occasions was willing to listen to our problems. Mrs. Farris was a lover of music and for a period of years directed the Chorus of our school. “Of all flic magic words That fall upon our ear “Sunny” lingers longest Forever and a year. cr HI HE 1950 ORIOLE STAFF has striven to portray to the eyes of its readers an appreciation of Puiaski High School ' s music department. It is needless to expound upon the rapid accomplishment this department has made and the high esteem in which it is held by critics. Not only is music an integral part of our school life, but it also affords pleasure to its participants, the student body, and the community. It is our highest endeavor to bring to your realization the endless efforts displayed by the members of the chorus and band in making musical culture accessible to those who desire it. The students of our school could not have been so honored in representing us in state festivities had it not been for the capable and accomplished leadership of the director, James H. Godfrey. It is through his wise and careful guidance that this department has become one of the best in our district since his coming to Pulaski High School in 1946. May the spirit that prevails upon the musicians and their school mates be an example to oncoming students as those attributes which are becoming to Pulaski High School students. We, therefore seek to honor and at the same time pay tribute to Mr. James H. Godfrey and the members of the Pulaski High School band and chorus by glorifying their efforts as the theme of our book. 7 HE 1950 ORIOLE Staff has endeavored herewith to bring to the minds of the readers a revocation of our many happy days in Pulaski High School through picture and word. May this Oriole be one that will always bring pleasure to its readers and honor to our school. We the members of the Pulaski High School ' Oriole Staff of 1950 are sincerely grateful for the long hours and the endless efforts of our able sponsors. Through it a means of student p articipation in school government is provided as well as cooperation and under- standing between the faculty and the students. The council consists of all club presidents and class representatives. The president, Duane Mink, and the vice president, Glenna Ballinger, were elected by the student body, while the secretary, Joan Fanning, and the treasurer, Gaynell Davidson, were elected by the council. Mrs. J. C. Totten was chosen the sponsor, succeeding Mrs. Luther Farris. The projects for the year included: The purchasing of a piano to be used in the gym- nasium; monetary aid for band supplies; and two placques in memory of Mrs. Luther Farris and Mr. Edward Jennings. There is real assurance of the council ' s value to the school ' s total program of education. Among the many activities sponsored by the council were: The March of Dimes; the Vaude- ville Show; the Farmer ' s Ball; and a Clean-Up Campaign. The very fine success of the council was dependent upon the cooperation of students and faculty. eight ☆ ☆ ☆ Principa MR. WILLIAM R. GARLAND, B. A., M. A. Good prospects were studied over and over again until the coaches had dwindled them down to what they thought was to be their team. With only fourteen lettermen returning to make up most of the squad, with such leaders as Co- Captains Owen Alley and Bill King, a successful season was drawn out, winning four, tying three, and losing three. The ’ ' Orioles ' ' won their first four ball games dropping only three. The Martinsville game pro- vided some of the greatest excitement of the season. Due to the unexcelled ability of Waddell ' s kicking foot, the Orioles won 7-6. The Orioles, 1 ' during the season, had many close contests. Long to be remembered will be the game between the Birds and their biggest rival, the Wytheville Maroons, which was a rousing 7-7 tie. The Orioles went in as an over-whelming under-dog and came out with a moral victory. Thus ended the 1949 season — completed and successful. VARSITY FOOTBALL SCHEDULE September 9 . . We . . . 25 . .
