BIOGRAPHY of I MR CASTLEMA This year, 1944, closes the teachng career of Iustus Collins Castleman-a career spanning better than half a century. Mr. Castleman, a Hoosier by birth, received his early educa- tion at Chesterton, Indiana. Having completed his high school work, he began his career as ia teacher in the fall of 1892, his first school being a rural district, where he conducted some twenty classes a day and did his own janitor work. Two years later he enrolled at De Pauw University, transferring in 1898 to Indiana University, where he took his B. A. degree in 1900, having majored in English and hstory. While in college he took an active part in athletics, both as a quarter-miler on the track team and a center fielder on the baseball nine in competition with a twin brother, his constant companion. He was also one of the editors of the school paper and the year book. He did his graduate work in the University of Chicago. After finishing his university Work, Mr. Castleman taught at Fairmount, Bloomington, and Evansville in Indiana, and in 1910 accepted Milwaukee's invitation to become a member of the South Division High School faculty. He spent many happy years at South as head of the English department. When the first World War came along, he enrolled with the Y.M.C.A. for overseas duty, serving in France during the last year of the war. On his return he taught at the School of Engineering for a short time, and later he resumed his duties at South Division. In 1924 he was made principal of Maryland Avenue School, where he remained until 1928, when he returned to the South Side as principal of Long- fellow School. A new high school was needed on the southwest side, and when barracks were erected in 1933, Mr. Castleman was made the first principal. A few years later he proudly trans- ferred his office to the magnificent building which Pulaski now occupies, and which he now leaves eleven years later with more than a touch of regret. Mr. Castleman expects to live in Milwau- kee upon his retirement from school work this fall.
