It has been a difficult year in some respects, but, with-all, we think a successful one, Perhaps it is the World-wide warfare going on that has made it seem different. Or possibly, it is due to some innate condition within ourselves, fostered by the war. In any case, the year has gone, and with it hundreds of our boys have left us to go out in the service of our country. Probably the best thing we who have remained behind have done has been to go along the while, as nearly normal as is possible. So doing has kept us steady, loyal, and We hope patriotic-characteristics necessary to our day. The best of good wishes to all. --l. C. CASTLEMAN , Q, 3 l' . . ' . . t, - r 4 -. There must be an intangible spirit ot loyalty and zeal ol students, faculty and patrons oi the community to make a school a vital and living force in the lives of young men and women. The graduates oi this school have already given evidence of the success of the founders of Pulaski High School, in building a great and living force for good in this school, and in this community. -B. E. BROWN All ' Pulaski High School, 2500 West Oklahoma Avenue, is a school which incorporates all the ideals of a true democratic education. There 4 nl u v , In ff - ,,...o-'- MAIN OFFICE Tlll are no laws, but regulations and where they are needed they are incorporated. Students may make preparations for their chosen careers by taking appro- priate subjects. The teachers of these various subjects are guides in the personal lives of the stu- dents as well, so that a spirit of friendship prevails throughout the student's high school life. In co-ordination with the main office there are many branches of the school which make Pulaski the great school that it is. The attend- ance office, the guidance offices, the treasurer's office are but a few of the many departments of which the administration consists. Since the War many phases of school life have changed. Teach- ers and students have entered the armed services and many courses have changed to allow for phases concerning military ideas, but in spite of the War Pulaski High School continues as it always has, Forward. n S TREASUREITS OFFICE Emily Hutter pi A WPENYOURE . FEBRUARY CLASS HISTORY It was February, 1939, when a small group of Freshmen entered the portals ot Pulaski High School. These students, lead by Mr. Wm. Czar- necki and Miss Edith Friese, were to prove to be some of the most interesting and active in the school's history. Even as Sophomores they held events which greatly added to the class treasury. These events were considered quite an attainment for lower classmen. The otficers ot this class were: Donald Albrecht, Catherine Blank, Phyllis Ann Gosch, Harry Harries, Marie Kneser, Dorothy Kowalski, and Carl Kuehne. The semesters tlew by and their Iunior year arrived. These people were extremely coopera- tive with the other classes. In November ot l94l they were co-sponsors with the llB class in the presentation of their Prom which carried a South American theme, a suitable back- ground tor the then popular Conga dance. Louis Szrot was elected king and reigned royal- ly with his queen, Grace Cyganek. This year the students were lead by the same group who were chosen the previous year. At last, but by no means least, the long awaited Senior year arrived for the eighty-nine students, whose class commission was com- posed of Donald, Albrecht, Gloria Bakken, Paul Blank, lane Breckenridge, Robert Dziedzic, Clit- ford Patzke and Marie Kneser. The annual Senior Prom was presented and beautiful Marie Kneser reigned as queen with her chosen king, Robert Kroening. The Senior vaudeville was held, and the pro- ceeds were left to the school as a parting gift. These eighty-nine students, who have the dis- tinction ot being the smallest graduating class from the new building, will long be remember- ed as one of Pu1aski's finest groups. . -.ii-.,. LEATRICE BABCOCK DALE HANNER Secretary President IOHN NADOLNY DANIEL IAWORSKI Vice-President Treasurer JUNE SENIHH CLASS IIISTUHY In the fall of September, 1939, Pulaski opened its doors to another new class of freshmen. Little did anyone know that day as these new students assembled in their new surroundings, how ambitious, potential, and challenging they would become. The freshmen and sophomore years passed leaving our class acquainted with the general routine of high school lite and a realization of its importance. For the most part this year was one of orientation. Mr. Filipiak and Miss O'Bri- en were chosen as the class sponsors. Then the junior year, Oh yes! This was when they became part of the upper classmen with many opportunities which were received with much gratification and put to the greatest ad- vantage. A spectacular event was the junior prom, a gay event with a South American at- mosphere. Louis Szrot reigned as king with Grace Cyganek as his chosen queen. The jun- ior class witnessed a great event that year when the swimming team took first place in the city meet with the aid of several up and coming junior boys, including Louis Szrot, Norman Sobczak, and Raymond Gaudynski. Through all the excitement, activities, and joys of high school days, sad incidents over- shadowed a part of it. Many ot our students, both boys and girls, were called to the service of our country, sacrificing not only their educa- tions: but in some cases, their lives. In this crisis many of the classmen here at school were found giving freely and willingly of their time to the aid of the Red Cross, ration boards, sal- vage and scrap drives, and above all, a great spirited campaign for the buying of war bonds and stamps. All too soon came September of 1942 with the last year of high school beginning for this class. Early in the year, class officers were elected as follows: President, Dale Hannerp vice president, Iohn Nadolnyg treasurer, Daniel Iaw- orskig and secretary, Leatrice Babcock. Social events of significance included the homecoming dance, the aquacade and the sen- ior prom, which highlighted the year. Through popular vote Marie Kneser reigned as queen with Robert Kroening as her king. The last few months of school included the class play, A Kiss for Cinderella, in which Marjorie Porath and Melvin Berg starred in the leading roles: the spring prom, character day, cap and gown day, and the senior ban- quet. The class was distinguished by many of the boys joining the Air Corps Reserve during the last semester, and the girls securing employ- ment in essential war industries and registering in nursing and F. B. I. work for their post-gradu- ate work. All too soon these events, planned with great sincerity and thought, came to a close, leaving many memories in the hearts of the Seniors as they said Good Bye, it not with a tear in their eyes, then in their hearts. The 1942 football season opened in Septem- ber with a great number of enthusiastic Ram- blers getting ready to do their part in putting Pulaski High School on top in the City Confer- ence. With the loss of Coach Williams, who had joined the army, only coaches Wozny and Litzow were left to show our boys the tricks of the game. Later in the season Coach Wozny also left to serve our country and Al Thurner relieved him as head coach. Graduation had once more dug deep into the nucleus of the old team but there were still some potential stars left. Last season's veterans who returned were Bob Dziedzic, Orv Mar- quardt, Bob Ureda, Arnie Kuchta, Dale Han- ner, Herb Stommel, Harv Kossow, George Wal- ter and Russ Coley. Weeks of intensified practice followed the first meeting in which the boys learned the fine points of blocking, tackling, punting, passing and other fundamentals of the game. Then the first game with Waukesha came, and it proved the opponent had practiced more than our Waukesha. Dale Hanner and Dan Iarecki held the spotlight with a 40 yard run and the catch- ing of two fine passes, respectively. The next week the Ramblers went to South Milwaukee, only to be defeated by a score of 18 to U. The team played well, but the mud and South Milwaukee were too much. Herb Stom- mel and Lank Piontek played heads up ball and proved to be worth watching. The Ramblers then opened their first city con- ference game with North Division. They played an exceptional defensive game but lack of offensive gave the north siders a 6 to U victory. Despite a muddy field, Herb Stommel and Orv Marquardt sparked afield. The following Saturday, Pulaski lost again, this time to Bay View by 14 to U. A few lucky breaks gave Bay View both touchdowns. After losing their homecoming game to Bay View, the team made its first score of the sea- son against East Division, but it seems Pulaski wasn't used to night ball and East overwhelm- qi.. - -pg 1 K,!- Arnold Kuchta Robert Dziedzic Co-captain Leonard Piontek Herbert Stommel ed the Ramblers 21 to 7 with excellent running by the backfield. With five straight defeats the Ramblers still weren't licked and proved it in their next game against West. Herbie Stornmel scored our sec- ond touchdown of the year and with fine de- fensive play by the line, was enough to beat the Westerners 5 to 3. This was the second con- ference victory in two years for Pulaski. Pulaski couldn't duplicate its victory over West and Rufus King proved too much and won 25 to U. King dominated the play through the entire game. Old Man Football took its final bow in the last game of the season with Washington High, a game which was much publicized. The tough line of the Purgolds and their fast breaking backs set up many touchdowns and Pulaski was mauled 49 to 6. Arnie Kuchta's pass to Dick Gill gave Pulaski the lone score and third of the season. So ended the football season for the gridders of Pulaski, rather unsuccessful season for our Ramblers, but considering that this was only their second year of conference football, Pulaski High School proved satisfactory. BASKETBALL -- CITY CHAMPIUNS Coach Wally Olen's basketball team reached its ulti- mate goal on March 5, 1943, by winning the city basket- ball championship. Besides winning the championship, Pulaski had three outstanding players who placed on all the all-city teams. Lank Piontek guard and Norm Gradecki forward were voted the most valuable men in the city conference, with Harry Wojnowski, forward, receiving honors by placing on the second team. Pulaski opened the city conference with a decisive victory over Bay View by a score of 32-20. Arnie Datka scored 13 points for top offensive record, and Len Piontek played exceptional defensive ball. Norm Gradecki played an outstanding game getting 13 points as Pulaski beat Tech 39-31. Harry Wojnowski was second getting 10. The next week the Ramblers met their first and last defeat of the season losing to Lincoln 26-33. Datka and Gradecki each scored 7 points. This didn't affect the Ramblers because they came right back and whipped Iuneau 42-26. Datka led the scoring with ll points. Then came the game with their traditional rivals of South Division. The Ramblers defeated South for the first time since l938 by winning 33-28. Gradecki was again high in scoring as Pulaski shellacked North 38-26. The defeat of Rufus King by a score of 42-21 put Pul- aski into undisputed second place. Arnie Datka, Harry Szklarski and Bob Vaneska played their final game for Pulaski. The losing of these stars was not going to stop Olen's big five, so they went on to defeat West 56-47. Gradecki scored 23 points with Wojnowski getting l7. Piontek with the aid of his height, controlled most of the rebounds. Pulaski passed Washington the next week by de- feating them 37-30 for undisputed first place with two games left. The first, with Custer, was won 37-30. Lank Piontek played a fine defensive game while Gradecki and Vfoj- nowski, led the offensive in defeating the Generals. Pulaski overwhelved East in the last game, March 5, by a score of 46-22 to become the new champions. After the game Coach Olen expressed his thanks to the whole teamg not only to the regulars, but to every one of the reserves who all stuck with the team to the final second of play. We congratulate you, Coach Olen and the team.
