Number Numbers. They were everywhere. 2,354 students, seven periods in a day, five days in a week, 180 school days in a year. Social security numbers, zip codes, bus numbers, classroom numbers, shoe sizes, license tags, telephone numbers, locker combinations, birthdays, student ID numbers, 8:40, 11:19, 3 : 18 . We all came to school, we all went to class, we all had lunch, we all went home. “May I have your attention for the morning announcements?” “Due tomorrow?” “Did you watch Cosby last night?” “I lost my homework.” “How ‘bout them Hogs?” “Did Kimberly really kill Emma?” “He’s dating her?” “What are you going to wear?” Most of us rode to school, either in cars or on a bus.
