La - em Sndwvo Campus Life - 22 SOMETHING OLD Each year, Pulaski Academy Alumni enjoy retur- ning to the school for Homecoming. Before the game, the FBLA sponsors an annual reception, which gives the alumni a chance to see old friends and teachers. In 1980, the reception was held on October 3, in the up- per library. Cindy Shaw was in charge of the event. Over half of the former students attended. SGIVIETHING In mid-May of 1980, the Pulaski Academy Backers launched a fund raising cam- paign to increase the seating capacity in our stadium. By August, they had raised enough money to double the seating. The new addition was dedicated on October 24. NEW Pulaski Academy has a new headmaster this year, Mr. John Cheska. He came on July 1, 1980 with a B.A. degree from Amherst Col- lege and a M.A. degree from U. of Massachusetts. His in- volvement in the school and student body has been a great success. Several of his achievements include field day, lengthened time for seniors' lunch, vans for field trips, and student apprecia- tion day. 90 ez - Sin Srwdw Campus Life - 24 GIRLS, GUYS Megs xW' .,-'ff' My f AA . 1 45 ,3 1 I I il! Mr. Cheska came to us after spending two years as headmaster at the American Academy in the American Community schools of Athens, Greece. As the head- master, Mr. Cheska is concerned with providing each student with the highest quality education available. Coach Coach Butch Gordon Ferriter Hornaday I The 1981 seniors led the Bruin football team to another suc- cessful season. The team, led by Coach Ferriter and Coach Horna- day, turned in the best record ever achieved by a Bruin team. The 9-2 record included a six-game winning streak and a first-time ever win over Class AA Oak Grove. The Bruins started their 2nd consecutive conference championship season with a win over Bauxite 20-0. For the second year in a row, the Bruins made it to the State Playoffs. Both games lost, to Mount Ida in the State Playoffs and Hazen, were by 1 point. The big game of the season between P.A. and Class AA Champion Joe T. Robinson was played on Halloween night. The Bruins once again came out victorious, 22-16. The football team elected Phil Pate, Scott Whitehurst, and Greg Smith as captains. . ar fl 1-4 Q 1 I x - x - fm , . -.. I !t!': ,A 1. --,l .' Little Rock, Ark. 72209 7 2 1980 Overview - 205 News. The year started on a sol- emn note while Americans in Iran were held hostage. Tension grew when six Americans were smuggled home by the Cana- dian consul. The registration was reinacted and plenty of demonstrators came also. Six congressmen were charged in the Abscam scandal. Many situ- ations in the world were para- lelled by the wars between Pepsi and Coke, and the Gazette and the Democrat. All four claimed to be on top. Both Iran and Iraq claimed to be win- ners of their war, and both the United States and Russia claimed to have superior arms. Voyager I sent back amazing pictures of our neighboring planets while Mount St. Helens blew its top, several times. Interest rates soared as Ronald Reagan rode the Tide of dis- content to a landslide victory over President Carter. Republi- cans gained control of the Sen- ate. Many say these victories were due to a religious awaken- ing. A devastating earthquake rocked ltaly for four hours. George Meany, the powerful AFL-CIO leader who fought with every president since F.D.R. died, as did Colonel Sanders who was responsible for the success of the Kentucky Fried 1980: THE Chicken food chain. In a contest that surprised people nationwide, Frank White carried the Democratic strong- holds of the state and defeated Governor Bill Clinton. The south was hit by a record setting heat wave as Arkansas suffered through several weeks of over 1000 Temperatures. Panic struck Damascus as a Titan ll missile blew up and the nuclear warhead was hurled several hundred feet. Sports. Pittsburg defeated Los Angeles in Super Bowl XIV, and, as if the security of the free world depended on it, the United States hockey team defeated the Soviet Union on the way to a gold medal. Magic Johnson led the Los Angeles Lakers to the NBA Champion- ship while Darrell Griffith led Louisville over UCLA to the NCAA championship. The Phila- delphia Phillies won the World Series. Genuine Risk became the first filly to win the Kentucky Derby in sixty-five years. Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran fought two controversial fights, and Bjorn Borg won a fifth Wimbledon in a classic final match with John McEnroe. As Darryl Dawkins broke back- boards, Rosie Ruiz won the Boston Marathon while riding YEARIN... on a subway, and Muhammad Ali unsuccessfully came back to the ring. Jack Nicklaus came back to win a fourth U.S. Open at Baltusrol. The Arts. In 1980, Slim Whitman stirred our ears with his musical contributions. New wave music became a best seller as Kenny Rogers made it big with all music fans. The preppie look of the 50's was the new style. Shogun was a smash but J. R. Ewing was shot. Mean Joe and Coke stole the hearts of millions with an award-winning commercial. The Empire Strikes Back, second movie in the Star Wars saga, was a box office hit as was Bo Derek, who scored a perfect 10. 1981. The festivities of the major College bowl games rang in the New Year. The Georgia Bulldogs beat Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl to win the NCAA championship. There gggg were sunny skies in Colorado while frozen orange juice was availa- ble on the tree in Florida. The fireworks and gala of the presi- dential inauguration were over- shadowed by the release of the American hostages in Iran, who left Teheran minutes after Mr. Reagan was sworn in. As 1981 began, the government announced that 1980 was the second year in a row for double digit inflation, and the big three auto makers announced losses of nearly four billion dollars. Once again, Philadelphia was in a championship game. This time, the Eagles met the Oak- land Raiders in Super Bowl XV. The Raiders won 27-10. THE HOPE OF TODAY. Overall, 1980 was a very good year. We can see that the good out- weighed the bad when we take the time to look back and remember, but the best lies in the future. 1981 has started on a very positive note. The new administration of Ronald Reagan promised an Era of Renewal that brings the hope of less bureaucracy, lower infla- tion, and lower unemployment, and a general upswing in the economy. Memories are a pre- cious thing, and this past year gave us plenty of them. Reflec- tion on the 80-81 school year calls on P.A. students to remember field days, a snowy Thanksgiving, school plays, new friends, and . . .As another Sen- ior Class prepares to walk through the doors of Pulaski Academy for the last time as students, l think it is fitting that we pause and think back over the past year . . .And praise the Lord. 602 - MSMJSAQ 0861 'A 7 ...f-11 Pizza M 1 VW try ' to The Answer to a Pizza Lovers Prayer sw it .
