Marseille is the second largest city in France and is the country's most important port. It is situated on the Mediterranean Coast east of the mouth of the Rhone River. Marseille, said to be the oldest city in France, Was colonized in 600 B.C. and known as Massilia. The city grew rich on trade in the Rhone Valley and Mediterranean, linking the city With the rest of Northern Europe. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Marseille exchanged hands repeatedly. It Wasn't until the thirteenth century that the republic was formed. There are presently one million people living in the city.
