The per- sonnel of M Division operate the ship's propulsion plant, evaporators and control the distribution of hotel services for the ship, such as drinking water, steam and compressed air. Steam is utilized from the ship's boilers to power two 10,000 horsepower turbines which propel the ship through the water. Steam is also used to generate electricity with four turbine generators, providing ten megawatts of power - enough electricity to power a small town. Two 100,000 gallons per day distilling plants make enough water to support the requirements of PUGET SOUND, as well as ships alongside.
