Band Slrives To Overcome Their Shze lt was known that the band was quite small this year, with only 42 band members. Despite their size they still had 11 freshmen and 14 seniors. Pueblo band director, Mr. Messing stated That the seniors were what held the bond together this year. Yes , said Messing, who has taught here for three years. The bond was small but there were reasons. He continued that mony of our sophomores were lost becouse of Gate English which was scheduled the some period as mar- ching bond. Also he stated, A few key people were lost because of an outside group that had to practice the some days as the Friday games. Messing went on to say, Many students did not have room in their schedule for band becouse of hoving to take classes they had failed in recent yeors. Messing soid, He was very pleased and that he couldn't have asked for more hard work and band effort. Messing also feels that the band tried very hord to get by their problems. Messing also stated, The band got o 'three' which is very good ot the U of A Band Festival. That was o very exceptional grade becouse the judges were much more strict then they had been in recent yeors. They gove out four one's which is a superior roting. They also gove out 12 fours which is a fair rating and nor- mally four's were never given out. Even though the band was disappointed by their band day score, they had many more performances in the school and com- munity functions. 0 Band marches onto the fleld. 23 Drum Mojorettes are: Marlo Vasquez and Vlrglnlo Potter. Jazz Band Jazzes Up The School Bond director, Ed M-essing, has been port of Pueblo's staff for three years while the jazz bond hos been on offered activity for only two years. A great fan of jazz, Mess- ing started the group with deep ideo for student potential and he also ployed with the bond to keep up the enthusiasm. The auditions weren't really tough. One just had to know how to read music, be able to repeat note for note what was ployed from o different instrument, and so on. Brenda Martinez played piano and was the only girl in the band. When asked how she felt about it, she remarked that it was really fun. Altogether, there were seven in- strumentolists in the group who ployed trumpet, sox, boss guitar, and drums. Members included Ismael Arvizu, Ricky Es- quibel, James Honnebohm, Robert McKen- zie, Richard Rivera, and Croig Robillard. Pueblo's drill team was mode up of twenty-eight girls this year. In order to meet the requirements of being on the drill team each student had to pass o perfor- mance audition. The girls practiced before school, during sixth hour, and when nec- cessary after school. The purpose of this group was to enhance the appearance of the marching bond ot all football games and final home bosketboll games. Other activities the group engoged in was Bond Doy and the Rodeo parade. 17 The band takes their practice time very seriously. 25 At Bond Day on Nov, 21, the flag girls show their best. 37 Practice makes perfect as the flags brush up on routines before a game. 45 The 1951-82 flag line Is as follows.
