Warriors Go Last year the 1980-81 baseball team made history at Pueblo. Pueblo's coach, Buddy Warnke, stated that he had exceptional pitching and a versatile team effort that brought the Pueblo XVarrior's baseball team the City Championship title, the first since 1963. The Warriors then traveled to Mesa to meet Scott- sdale High School. At Mesa's Hohokam Field, in the first game of the class AAA State Championships, Peublo lost to Scottsdale by a score of 3-13. Pitcher, James Gonzales ended the season with a 7-A record. He had struck out 81 in 73 innings and had an ERA of 2.31. James was also awarded athlete of the year. Golfers Increase and '81 Thinclads Send 3 lo Qfafe More golfers participated than last year, stated golf coach Niel. The most improved player for the year was Anthony Mor- alos, He played with eight struggling other new team mem- bers. Coach Niel stated that Rey GrUalva was a leader of the team who led five of his companions to the divisionals. The teams' practices were held after school ot Silverbell golf course and the matches were played at Reid Park golf course. Coach Niel felt that the golfers worked better as individuals than as a team, because their overall record was not very strong. Varsity track ended the '81 season by qualifying for state finals in three events. Senior, Dan Gibson, won the high jump with a 6'2 jump and junior Tom Thomas ran the 400 meter sprint with a 48.54 time which was the best in the state. Rose Grigsby of the varsity girls track squad also qualified in the shot- put for the state finals at the season's end. 17 Coach Niel checks a golfer at competition. 21 Tony Peralta, Jose Galindo, Carlos lslas and Rey GrUolva depart from a hard fought golf match.
