i ts Ma lta all T k s H South Pueblo defeated the Cholla Chargers 59-56 to win the AAA-Southern Division Cham- pionship even though Cholla beat the Warriors three times during the season. Pueblo took the lead, and kept Cholla's two top players from scoring not more than 20 points between them. Tony Hackworth led the team with 18 points, Vince Do- zier added 13 points, Ralph Williams had 14 points and Danny Gibson 12 points, which led to the team's victo- ry. Coach LaVetter was quoted as saying, We didn't have an all-city player, but we had an all-city team. After winning the AAA-Championship, Pueblo's players traveled to Tempe to play East Pheonix High School. Pueblo was elimi- nated in the second round of the AAA-State playoffs when East Pheonix Longhorns de- feated them with the score of 61-41. Pueblo's overall season was 19-7. Coach Roland LaVetter announced his resignation from coaching to his players at halftime in the locker room, during the Tempe game. Ac- tively coaching for ten years, Coach Roland LaVetter has brought back two state cham- pionships in 77 and 78 . Coach LaVetter's entire re- cord for his ten year coaching career at Pueblo was 185-106. At the season's end the Ari- zona Daily Star picked Tony Hackworth for a place on the all-city second team and hon- orable mentions went to june Lever and Danny Gibson.
