Eugene Dong Astonishment might have been the reaction of an observer to any of three summer gatherings of exceptional high school students. Boys' and Girls' States were workshops in govern- ment and in human relations. At the U of A, Girls' Staters participated in weird activities, like marching to breakfast at 7:00 wearing paper hats, and singing songs. All for a purpose, of course, for the girls were promoting their model cities, and their candidates for state offices. Activities at Boys' State on the NAU campus in Flag- staff, were a bit more masculine but still exciting. The mock political parties had a parade and demonstration through the downtown streets. Anytown, Arizona, held in Prescott at the YMCA camp, was a workshop where teenagers from all over the state learned to love all of humanity by learning about, associating with, and understanding other racial, religious, and political groups. The honor of representing Pueblo at the workshops was given to those nine seniors by a screening of the faculty members. Anytown applicants also were inter- viewed by a group of students who had already attended that workshop. Were Developed Through Summer Workshops Curol Hinton SUS 59l'0Pk0 Janie Phebus 41
