PUEBLO S FIRST STATERS X The signal honor of representing Pueblo High School for the fir st time as members of Girls State and Boys State went to the above pictured happy members of the Class of '57 LEFT TO RIGHT they are Andy Liechty Gene Bracamonte Judy Grimes Jay Busby Liz Merino Ed Andres and finsetj Rene Alvarez Boys State was held at Flagstaff on the campus of Arizona State College and Girls State was conducted on the local campus of the University of Arizona Achieving highly desired distinctions at the Flagstaff meetings were Ed Andres who was elected to the presidency of the Senate and Rene Alvarez who was appointed to a post on the Governor's cabinet Both Judy and Liz were honored by their co delegates Judy was voted out standing citizen of her city and Liz was elected to a permanent officer ship which entitles her to return to the Arizona campus this summer in order to assist the '57 group of Staters with the important business of organization. Delegates to the two annual meetings are selected by a faculty committee after the entire faculty and administration of the school is polled for nominations The award is based upon all- around schoolcitizenship and includesconsideration of achievement in school activities and indi- vidual character. The activityis sponsored by the American Legion Clubs and is conducted throughout the coun- try on an individual state basis. Schools send delegates in proportion to the school population. STATE AND REGIONAL HO ORS FOR PUEBLO Elizabeth Merino was elected president of the Yucca Region FTA and was sent to Chicago for aweek'svisit and to attend the National Conven- tion of the Future Homemakers of America. The Yucca district comprise S most of the high schools in Southern Arizona. If Q 72 V HALL OF FAME The yearbook proudly presents JAY B USB Y, as the recipient of the FIRST ANNUAL ELDORADO HALL OF FAME AWARD. Jay, who, among other activities, is an ardent competitor in basket- ball and baseball, vice-president of the s enio r class, honor society member, boys' state dele- gate, and active participant in dozens of s c h o ol activities, was selected for the awa rd by a stu- dent and faculty committee, after candidates for the honor were chosen by a senior home r oom committee headed by Mary Cass and Charles Hall. When the 30-pe 1' s on committee, equally divided between students and faculty, had voted, .Tay had a clear lead over his four c ompetitors. The ELDORADO hopes the Hall Of Fame will become a permanent department in the book and that all members will be honored in subsequent is s ue s. Andy is a member of the National Honor Socie ty, a Boys' State delegate, a mem- ber of the senior class executive council, sports editor for the ELDORADO, and a campus leader. Last year he was named to the Tuc s on All-City Ba ske tball Team, and was captain of the 1956 football Warriors. Andy's major competition for the honor was Angris Alexander. The 100- voice choir is proud of their uniform, navy blue robes with Columbia blue stoles and white shoes. Theme of the group is a Zuni tribal chant accompanied by an Indian drum. For informal occasions the group dons a. colorful Western-Indian uni- form. The two center-spread pictures show the group in action. It played at all home games and made visiting trips to Amphi, Cata- lina, South Mountain and No- gales. It also participated at Davis-Monthan during fire pre- vention week, for the Veterans Day parade, and for the Rodeo parade. It participated in the U. of A. The original idea for the mural was arrived at after class discussion and election. The picture was exe c ut e d onblackboard panels in colored chalks in desert tones. Among the regular pro- jects of the Commercial Art Class is the designing ofbook covers and the il- lustration ofmagazine ar - ticles and stories. The Advanced Art Class spends the majority of its tim e on individual pro- jects invarious art medi- ums including c a s ein s , charcoal, and pastels. Corbett described the organization of the Arizona State Legisla- ture and explained the work of the important committees. A strong friend of the state uni- versity, Senator Cor- bett, spent considerable time showing the con- nectionbetween the Uni- versity and the Legisla- ture. McFarland who makes a lasting impression on future voters of Arizona by his friendly willing- ness to discuss the political issues that face the state government. Seated on Mr. Maung's right are Miss Monica Morse, University of Arizona, an appren- tice teacher and Mr. Ted Pedersen also an apprentice teacher from the University of Arizona. On Mr. Maung's left is Mr. Phillip Woodruff, Pueblo English and Social Studies teacher. Seated on the risers behind the instructors is a part of an experimental Senior Class in English and Social Studies. The classes under the direction of Mr. Woodruff and Mr. Ciochetto and their apprentice teachers is combined in amodified core program in Humanities. In addition to the speakers mentioned above, the class has heard Mr. Rau1Castro, County Attorney, Mr. Ben J. McKinney, County Sheriff, Judge Clark Johnsong Dr. Bertram S. Mercer Johnson. As the feature of the study of teen-age problems, at Pueblo High School, a group of students under the direction of Mrs. Jacqueline Hawkins had made preliminary studies of the Arizona Juvenile Code and the causes of juvenile delinquency. As a part of this study, the group participated in several mock hearings, according to regular court procedure. Present and participating in the assemblies presented by the group were Judge Johnson of the local juvenile court, and Mr. Foster, the chief probation officer. Although Arizona does not allow actual juvenile juries to sit in juvenile court, the merit of the idea was recognized by the local juvenile court. Two s eparate juries sat in the two assemblies. Initiated in its first year of existence the picnic promises to become a real Pueblo tradi- tion. The 1956-57 Pueblo High Warrior cage club, in its sophomore year of inter-scholastic c ompe tition, became the first PHS squad to see action in the State AA Tournament. Finishing the s eaSon with a 3-5 Southern AA Division record, the Warriors went to the tourney as number three team. Facing the South Mountain Rebels in their opener, the team rated to finish second in the state, the Pueblo five turned in a stunning 72-63 upset. The Warriors were ousted in their second contest, 53-48, by the West Phoenix Thunderbirds. In finishing the season with a 7-12 mark, Pueblo had three rep- resentatives in the city's top prep scorers lis ting s. Forwards Andy Liechty and Angris Alexande r were the lone Warriors to top the 200 point mark with 251 and 225 respectively. The third team member was Center Calvin Walker with 162 points, for tenth place in the city stand- ings. Honors attained by team members included the All-City selections with Andy Liechty on the first team, Angris Alexander on the second team, and Cal Walker and Jay Busby honorable mention. Liechty was chosen captain of the second All AA Tournament team. On the All-Southe rn District team, Andy was one of the two unanimous choices.
