You endured life's struggle and now you are enjoying the great happiness of being at home with God forever. V While living on earth you were typical of the finest traditions of Catholic High, as Cheerleader, Paladin Leader in the C.S.M.C., Tatler reporter, assistant sports editor, and Legionnaire of Mary. As a tribute to you, two statues are now gracing the halls of Pueblo Catholic High: Our Lady of Grace, and Saint Maria Goretti. ln addition, the Roberta Riley Polio Memorial Fund has been established. We pray that it will be Cod's will for us to have as beautiful a death as you had, with Saint Therese, The Little Flower, by our side. God must have loved you much more than we did, or He would not have taken you. As we go through life, we shall think of you always'at our side, guarding and guiding us on the right path, so that some day we may be together again. You were truly one of the greatest Shamrocks of all! 5 5. 1 1 QM 04.4.1113 M Cv c. an WVM QCLM My ft i , M -A R' -fa in-Q, MW +L od . 2J,Z4,,.x,o4-6 , 9 . 1' - 2 ,L NN ' XM? jx: A gg X x ki! gil! From your childhood, to your girlhood, and finally to woman- hood, you are the example of all us students. You not only worked laboriously here on earth, but from the moment you breathed your last, your mission began on earth: HI wish to pass my life in Heaven doing good upon earth. Until the end of the world I can take no repose. But when the angel shall have said, cTime exists no more,' then I shall restf, Time still is . . . Therese, do not rest . . . Let your roses still fall. Strengthen us, O Saint Therese, as God strengthened you here on earth. Teach us the words you once uttered: '60, how I love Him . . . My God . . . I love Youf, St. Therese, Little Flower of Jesus and Patroness of the Diocese of Pueblo, help us follow the example of your Little Way, that we may more easily gain heaven. 3 PUEBLO CATHGLIC HIGH SCHCCL 1' Our School . . . where many Shamrocks pass through its portals each day seeking warmth, good will, understanding, knowledge, and a Catholic way of life. We deeply appreciate your un- tiring efforts and your ceaseless works. Your helping others will not go unrewarded. N 'S N X I N Out of the depths of this valley of tears, through which suffering humanity painfully struggles . . . up from the bellows of this sea endlessly buffeted by the waves of suf- fering . . . we raise our eyes to you, Most Beloved Mother Mary, to be comforted hy the contemplation of your glory and to hail you as Queen and Mistress of Mankind. With legitimate filial pride, we wish to exalt your queen- ship and to recognize it as due to the sovereign excellence of your entire being, 0 Most Sweet True Mother of Him who is King by right, by inheritance, and by conquest. Reign, 0 Mother and Mistress, by showing us the path of holiness and by guiding and assisting us that we may never stray from it. In the heights of heaven, you exercise your primacy over the choirs of angels, who acclaim you as their sovereign, and over the legions of saints, who delight in heholding your dazzling beauty. So, too, reign over the entire human race, above all by opening the path of faith to those who do not know your Divine Son. Reign over the Church, which acknowledges and extols your gentle dominion and has recourse to you as a safe refuge amid the calamities of our day. Reign especially over that part of the Church which is persecuted and oppressed, give it strength to hear adversity, constancy never to yield under V unjust compulsion, light to avoid falling into enemy snares, firmness to resist overt attack, and at every moment un- wavering faithfulness to your kingdom. Reign over men's minds, that they may seek only what is trueg over their wills, that they may follow solely what is good, over their hearts, that they may love nothing but what you yourself love. Reign over individuals and over families, as well as over societies and nations, over the assemblies of the powerful, the counsels of the wise as over the simple aspirations of the humble. Reign in the streets and the squares, in the cities and the villages, in the valleys and the mountains, in the air, on land and on the sea, and hear the pious prayer of all those who recognize that yours is a reign of mercy, in which every petition is heard, every sorrow comforted, every misfortune re- lieved, every infirmity healed, and in which, at a gesture from your gentle hands, from death itself there arises smiling life. Obtain for us that all who now, in every corner of the world, acclaim and hail you Queen and Mistress, may one day in heaven enjoy the fullness of your kingdom in the vision of your divine Son, who with the Father and the Holy Ghost, lives and reigns for ever and ever. J., - Q I Q PRIESTS WHO TEACH RELIGIO AT PUEBLO CATHQLIC HIGH Saint Therese has a special shower of roses for our Religion priests, as she once said, I entered Carmel in order to save souls, especially to pray for priests. Here at Pueblo Catholic High, these sons of God devote their valuable time so l that we may be prepared to meet the many challenges we must face in our lives, in such a manner that is fitting for the salvation of our souls. l l May you receive many spiritual gifts from Saint Therese for your never-tiring efforts in bringing us, the students of Pueblo Catholic High, a better understanding - 1 of the Way, the Truth, and the Life. i We wish to take this opportunity to thank you, Monsignor, for the beneficial guidance that you have extended to us high school students this year. Never has your door been closed to those in need of your help. With the basis of a good Christian foundation, given us here at Pueblo Catholic High, we will become good Christian citizens as Saint Therese and you both want us to be. Again, we thank you for the counsel and friendship shown to us grateful students. REVEREND DANIEL R. HUBER VERY REVEREND MONSIGNOR ELWOOD C. VOSS FATHER HUBER . . . Beloved assistant of Saint Therese Parish, you have come to us through the guidance and inspira- tion of Saint Therese, Little Flower of Jesus. How often the students have come to you with their daily troubles and have been received with the kindness and gentleness of your heart. You have given new hope to many by your words and have given in- spiration to many more by your actions. For this and all you have done for us, we are eternally grateful and we sincerely hope that Saint Therese will continue to shower upon you her choicest roses. n ix I . ,L ... i ' . ..: LQQLLET H ig , ii s y n ,-ji Tay f M MW . e -MW-W.-A-, .Z ..,,. :A , g j :gy W i, '41fi 7ig jI g EV ey ,iff ig , si ' . ff 1 X ' .V 1 X A 4 , A ' ' , 1 L 5' g sing , 11,555 - g - :F if 'W at ' -- -, . . O Mary Queen of the Apostles, pray for the missions that all may know the Saviour of the World-Ame-nf, This simple prayer is the foundation of our Catholic Students, Mission Crusade. At every meeting or gathering of Crusaders this plea to Mary is offered. However, weekly sacrifices are also contributed by the students of P.C.H. to further work in foreign and home mission fields. Under the able guidance of Sister Mary Noreen, the C.S.M.C. Executive Council have achieved the purpose of bringing about a stronger love for the missions here at P.C.H. Besides working for the missions, the C.S.M.C. invited U. S. Congressman, third district of Colorado, J. Edgar Chenoweth, to address the Student body for a general assembly. During the assembly the members of the delegation to Notre Dame, August 26-29, 1954, made reports on their experiences where they met many students from all over the world. Smiles of anticipation are prevalent as these fifteen C.S.M.C. delegates prepare to leave by car for La Junta, where they boarded the El Capitan bound for Notre Dame University for the Sixteenth National CSMC Conven V, Bob Lalich, President of the school C.S.M.C., introduces the Honorable Congressman J. Edgar Chenoweth to Monsi' gnor Elwood C. Voss. Mr. Chenoweth appeared at a school assembly and spoke against the admission of Red China into the United Na- tions. The smiling faces of Jeanne Spitzer, Ted Vidmar, Pat Wil- liams. John Fagan, Mary Lynn Wagner, Jack Okey, Bob La- lich, Arlene Vigil, Bob Zayac, Mary Nell Maloney, John Mathis, Bob Valentine, Sheila Marsden, Jim Rodacy, Gerald- ine Butkovich, Elaine Ken- nedy, Barbara Soldano, Violet Senatore, Aleen Cline, Pat James, Barbara Crassman, Julie Rupp, Carol Kasic, Jane Cust, Carol Jabn, Barbara Ur- sich, and Sharon Maloney under the direction of Sister Mary Noreen, make up the Executive Council of the C.S.M.C. They work long and hard but little recogni- tion they get, Some people think it,s all in jest. Formations they make, and music they play, To entertain the crowds for just one day. Many are the hours spent in plight, So as to look good on first sight. Stray notes you may hear, and trumpets blare, But on they march without a single care. may Although in number they are few, The band itself is always true. However it isnit all work and no play, There are always plenty of laughs during the practice day. Trophies we have contributed to the school, Although very small, the intentions were true. Achieving an average two win, two loss record in League play and finishing third in the title race, the Green tide showed its strength by winning over several strong non-League teams. Getting off to a slow start, the Shamrock dropped their opener 26-O under the lights at Lamar. Hampered by a lack of experience the Sons of Erin fell easy prey to the revenge-seeking Savages. Led by Halfback Reuben Trinidad, the Shamrock came roaring back a week later to trounce the Florence Huskies 14-0. Playing their first home game the Irish scored a smashing 14--0 upset over the powerful Trinidad Miners, September 25. The Shamrock blasted for two touchdowns and a safety while the Miners could not tunnel through the Green and White stonewall defense. The hot and cold Irish had another off day October 1, as they were downed 19-6 by the speedy Centennial Bulldogs. The Shamrocks trailed 19-0 until late in the last quarter when Don Beauvais sprinted 42 yards for the lone Irish tally. With four tough non-league games under their belts, the Shamrocks opened their league season successfully with a 25-7 victory over the St. Mary's Pirates, October 10 at Colorado Springs. Homecoming, October 17, found the Shamrocks victors over the St. Mary's Crusaders of Walsenburg by a 27-12 score. Six players entered the Irish scoring act and Augis Olivas returned a punt 99 yards for Walsenburgis second touchdown. On October 23, the Shamrocks met and tamed the bustling La .lunta Tigers 24-7. Displaying a powerful ground attack the Shamrocks crossed the goal once in every quarter while La Junta scored their lone tally via the air lanes. The Sons of Erin extended their winning streak to four games on October 31 by edging the Regis Raiders 7-0. After striking early in the game for their touchdown, the Shamrocks relied on their strong defense to hold the heavier Denver team scoreless. The Shamrock received their worst beating of the year at Trinidad November 7, when the Holy Trinity Tigers capped the League crown by trampling the Green and White 28-0. Trying for second place in the league, the Irish were thwarted again as the Abbey Bears took to the air to down the Shamrocks 20-12. Joe Duca passed for two Abbey touchdowns as the Bears spoiled the Shamrocks' last grid game and downed the Irish for the third, straight year. She prayed with the team before every game and played with them in spirit, cheering them on to victory and sometimes to defeat. Roberta never gave up hope. During a game, no matter how lopsided the score, she kept cheering and praying for a higher score for her Shamrocks. Her life was dedicated to her school activities. Everyone and everything about Catholic High was her life. The joy of winning and the heartaches of losing were all dearly felt by her. The outcome of all sports events meant just as much to her as they did to the members of the team. Although Roberta will never be jumping high for the Shamrocks, she will be cheering for them in Heaven, whenever they take the field or court for an athletic contest. We miss her greatly and shall continue to do so. In our hearts we know that she is cheering us on from her Heavently Goal Post. Playing with almost no experience they were unable to win a non-league game and finished in a battle with the Walsenburg Crusaders to stay out of the League cellar. Early in the season, Coach Nearii began his rebuilding program which placed several Sophomores on the varsity. Ray De Luca and John Lane alternated on the starting five while Dave Socier and Ted Vidmar served as substitutes. The team was paced by Senior lettermen Bob Pugel and Reuben Trinidad, Junior monogram winner Jim Drury and Junior John Williams. Williams topped the Sham- rocks in the scoring department.
