Have pity on this world torn by the most terrible conflicts, burning with the fires of hate-victim of its own sins. May Your Heart be moved at the sight of so much ruin, pain and sorrow. Mother of Mercy, Queen of Peace, pray for us and give back to a world at war a righteous peace and the justice and charity of Christ. Have special pity on those peoples, who throughout the ages have honoured Your Heart with particular devotion by the veneration of Your ikons. Grant them also peace and lead them back to the one fold of Christ. We consecrate to this Maternal Heart our persons, our families, our country -the whole of humanity. Protect and save us. fy!! There is probably not one pupil, from the time you first came to PCH, who has not, at one time or another, gone to you for help in solving a problem. Each of these you have met with kind understanding. Each pupil has been made a little wiser, or a little more encouraged by your kindness. We have always felt that you were our friend, and this you have proved to be in many, many instances. We know that there have been times, probably too nu- merous to mention, when we tried your patience. For such times, we are truly sorry and hope that you will re- member only the good things about us students at Cath- olic High. We feel we are very privileged to have been under your guidance during the past four years. May Our Lady during this, her year, shower an abund- ance of blessings upon you. Stovik has held the position of director of discip- line at Pueblo Catholic High School. He has undertaken the task of making the stu- dents realize -that the high school students of today should and MUST be the leaders of tomorrow. The purpose of high school is to mold o n e ' s character and plant good moral habits. Only those serious-minded enough to realize the difficulty of this great task can even hope to achieve it. Thank you for your part in making the 1955-54 school year one of the best in its history. From left: Father Elwood C. Voss, Father Louis C. Stovik. I should have ordered a larger ribbon, declared President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, as he fastened the blue star-studded ribbon of the Congressional Medal of Honor around the neck of six-foot Marine Lieutenant Raymond G. Murphy. Pueblo Catholic High students can proudly salute Lieutenant Raymond jerry Murphy, a member of the Class of 1948. Jerry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Murphy, is the first alumnus to receive the highest military award, the Congressional Medal of Honor. Lt. THE GRADUATES GIVE THANKS LEGACIES, MEMORIES, good wishes-all these the Seniors leave behind them-and side by side with these they jot down some thoughts important to them: TO PCH: God bless these walls that have sheltered us for four of the most glorious, golden, carefree years we will ever know-years in which we have learned first and foremost the beauty of loving God and the peace in staying close to Him-years that have taught us to give and to take- to face the future unafraid because we have been prepared to go out and fight for what we know is right-days and months of heartaches and victories, work and fun-all this, and friends and counselors such as we'll never again have the privilege of knowing. These four years at P.C.H. have given us a deep sense of gratitude for what we are now leaving-the happiest days of our lives. TO THE FACULTY: Thanks and appreciation can never end the feeling we have for you. We know that without your endless patience, kindness and generosity, we could never have attained the high goal of graduation from Pueblo Catholic High. We whisper a prayer of thanks- May God bless you and be with you always. My 1955 FOOTBALL The 1955 edition of the Shamrock football squad proved to be a real challenger for League honors. The championship was not decided until the last game of the season in the game with the Abbey Bears which the Irish lost 12-6. Much credit must be given to Head Coach Mike Davlin and his two able assistants, Dave Davis and john Shonk, for their superb job of leading the team through such a successful season. SHAMROCKS 44 - LAMAR 7 The Shamrocks opened the season one week after school started and, playing in 90-degree weather, they dumped the Lamar Savages by a 44-7 count. jack Datz, Irish co-captain, led his teammates on to victory by scoring four touchdowns and an extra point. This win was only the second that PHC has won from the Savages in a six- year series dating back to 1948. However, it was the most impressive victory by far that either team has scored. The win was especially sweet for Coach Mike Davlin. just one year ago Lamar spoiled his coaching debut at Pueblo Catholic by defeating the Sons of Erin 12-6. Dicino scored twice more before the afternoon was over and jack Datz added 14 points to the Irish cause. FRANCIS 7 On September 26, with the reserves playing most of the game, the Shamrocks rolled on to a 33-7 victory over the Gremlins of St. Francis of Denver. The Irish entered the game knowing nothing of the strength or ability of their foes, since no scouting report was available. jack Datz again led the Irish by scoring two touch- downs. It was the second win in as many years for Davlin-coached squads against St. Francis. john Garnett, fleet Irish wingback, crosses the goal line for the second time in the St. Fran- cis game. The Irish scored once in the third quarter, but it proved to be too little and too late. Leo Dicino crashed four yards for the only touchdown. SHAMROCQKS 66 -W PIRATES 7 Coming back strong from their previous defeat, the Shamrocks rolled over the Pirates from St. Marys of Colorado Springs. Ten different players contrib- uted to the lrish scoring efforts. Before the game was over, the entire squad had participated in the QILIIUC. Irish reserves get down on their knees to pray for victory in the Abbey game. BARBARA BRYAN Homecoming Queen HOMECOMING October 18 was a big day in the life of Barbara Bryan. On that day she reigned as queen of Shamrock Homecoming festivities. After the traditional Mass at St. Patrick's in the morning, the Shamrock football team met St. Mary's of Walsenburg and defeated them 49-12. That eve- ning, the junior Class sponsored a dance in the school gymnasium. The music was provided by Beech Maury. Stardust served as the theme for the dance. The Irish scored in the second period on a pass from Leo Dicino to John Garnett covering 17 yards. After being behind most of the second half, they came back with another TD in the fourth quarter. But with only four minutes left in the game, La junta scored again. When the final gun sounded, the Irish were on the short.end of a 19-14 score. as an LJ The starters for the Shamrocks were linemen Reuben Trinidad, Gene Tapia, Moe Thomas, joe Martinez, joe Puleo, Ed Beau- vais and Cliff Fleming. Back- field starters were john Garnett, Frank Gonzales, Frank Gutier- rez, jack Datz and Leo Dicino. SHAMROCKS 0 REGIS O On November 1, the Irish played host to the powerful Regis Raiders. The game was a tightly played one and touchdowns were scarce. The Shamrocks managed to push within the Regis five yard line, but met up with a stub- born Raider defense on both attempts. The Irish struck hard and fast and scored on the first play of scrimmage on an 80 yard screen pass play from jack Datz to end Reuben Trinidad. The Bears were not to be counted out, however, and came back to score in the third period to tie the game at 6-6. Then, with five minutes remaining in the game, the Bears scored again. The Tigers scored once in the third quarter before Reuben Trinidad, junior tailback, clinched the game with an eight yard end run with three minutes remaining in the game. ED MURRAY Varrily Barkezball Coach BOB PUGEL, Forward JIM DRURY, Forward M uv W I l e 1954 Irish cage squad got off to a bad start but caught fire late in the season and established a reputable record before the year was over. With only three returning lettermen, Jack Schafer, jack Datz and Gene Buser, Coach Ed Murray had to form a team of untried hopefuls. After compiling a two won and five lost record in early season play, the Sham- rocks came back to win 10 of their next 13 games. The three losses were to the Abbey Bears, Southern Parochial League champions. Besides the three lettermen, Coach Murray's squad was bolstered by junior guard, Reuben Trinidad, who turned in many fine floor games for the Sons of Erin. Datz was the leading scorer for the team, compiling a 13.8 average for League games. Tops in the rebounding department was Gene Buser, whose 6 foot 7 inch frame was a menace to any opponent under the boards. jack Schafer was elected Captain of the squad and his all-around hustle and spirit kept the Shamrocks in the running at all times. . ...I.,,,,f,,,,,i , if if' ff i , - c . as f-is ' REUBEN TRINIDAD, Guard FRESHMAN BASKETBALL-Front row: Ted Vidmar Gary Mikulas, jack Drury, john Lane, Ray DeLuca and Dave Socier.
