Time was when crocodiles were native here. The earth once thundered to the mammoth's tread. Man came quite late -- some twenty thousand years ago -- and left upon our eastern plains a few chipped points to tantalize the experts. The first white men to enter the region were the Spanish explorers who gave to almost every mountain and stream in southern Colorado the name it bears today. . At the turn of the 19th century many famous Americans came into the vast region. Among these trail-blazers were Major Stephen Long, Colonel John C. Fremont, Captain J. W. Gunnison, and General Zebulon Pike. In 1806 Pike discovered the famous mountain that now bears his name. Three years before Pike made his claim on the renowned peak, the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France. The northeastern half of Colorado was included in this famous purchase. The rest of Colorado was bought from Texas in 1850. The discovery of gold near Denver in 1858 brought not only miners, mer- chants, land-promoters and gamblers across the plains, but also many famous missionaries. In 1868 the Rev. Charles Machbeuf became the first bishop of Colorado. Five years earlier he had started the first Catholic school near Denver. By the time of the death of the zealous bishop in 1889 the Catholic population had grown to 40,000. Our own city of Pueblo received its first priest in 1871. Five years later Colorado became the thirty-ninth state of the union. Two years before -NL:-If li .I as St. Patrick high school, had its first graduation class. The Catholic population of Pueblo increased through the years. In 1941 the Most Rev. Joseph C. Willging became the fir st bishop of the Pueblo diocese. Just seven years after his appointment he saw his way to the realization of his dream of a new and larger Catholic high school to accommodate the growing Catholic population. In 1950 the new Pueblo Catholic high school was finished. Thus this great state of ours, rich in mineral products, rich in agriculture and industry, has seen vigorous growth in many fields. Not least has been its growth in the true Faith -- the Cat oliql Faith. fy, xii it V m l' . l- U? S? May God continue to bless you, making you good citizens of the State of Colorado and worthy citizens of His eternal Kingdom. Sister Ellenora, Principal 10 The Rev. Elwood C. Voss, Superintendent The years of Christ's youth were described by Saint Luke in the words, And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and grace before God and men. We who have been destined to direct this year of your life at Pueblo Cath- olic High School believe that the same words may be applied to you. You have been reminded, and with reason, that every year of your life is important, for time should be measured with eternity as a back- ground. As you grow in age, every experience that was yours during your high school days will possess greater significance in your own mind. You will realize more fully that the prayers you offered, the hours you spent in study, and the activities in which you participated were all a part of God's plan for your success in time and eternity. May the school year of 1952-1953, which is portrayed in the pages ahead, be for you a treasured memory, a noble inspiration, and a true outline of your personal life. Here the class pres idents ---- Jack Lacy James Massara Frank Ricotta and Anthony Oreskovich--pile gifts for the State hospital patients into the arms of Sister Ellenora, principal . Floats this year were made by the four classes and the alumni. In previous years the various organizations also sponsored floats in the Homecoming pa- rade. The freshmen copped first place with their float, Hats Off to the Shamrocks. Sophomores took second place using the theme, To Our Goal Through Mary. The junior float, which received third place, depicted a football surrounded by leprechauns, symbolizing the luck of the Irish. The senior float was a tiger cage. Her Royal Highness Rides Onto the Field f jrgfgk tt Queen Jeanne Gentile, pictured above with her at- tendants -- Irene Tezak Cleft, and Joan Shawgo -- reigned over this year's Homecoming on November 9. One of the most successful campaigns ever staged at P. C. H., the selling of tickets, on which the voting was based, was handled entirely by the football queen candidates. The campaign went over the top from a financial standpoint. The afternoon's activities were highlighted by the game between the P. C. H. Shamrocks and the undefeated Holy Trinity Tigers. The game ended at a 6-6 deadlock. The Homecoming dance, sponsored by the alumni, climaxed the 1952 festivities. 75 1 Pep Club Students from Miss Nutt's dancing classes paced through some square dance formations before the assembled student body on the Fri- day before homecoming. Rain prevented their giving an exhibition of their spirit and skill on Stauter field on the big day. Formations Majorettes with their batons demonstrated their agility before the students and faculty. They were accompanied by the Shamrock band. 2 5 E I 2 2 76 -'ex-' -- -F-'-4 '1 f3'Jf4f-L 2 .
