1 -2- Blossom-laden Spring mornings, lazy summer afternoons, autumn days odorous with wood smoke, frosty winter evenings—every season had its own special charms for students of P.H.S. Teen age loafers lolling on the grass on sultry September afternoons; dreamy couples crunching dry October leaves under heedless brown heels; coatless high spirited sophomores jostling one another on icy walks when the mercury registered a cool five above; students soaking up the sun at noon on a balmy April day—flashes of friendships made, of good fellowship displayed—these were special moments to be remembered and cherished throughout all the seasons to come. NE OUT OF TEN STUDENTS ARE UNAWARE OF THE FACT THAT IN THE CENTER At the end of the school year students looked back with nostalgia at the days spent within the walls of Provo High—the lessons learned, the friendships made, the tears shed, and the laughter shared. Many things made up their life—the sound of the bell ringing the tardy note, cries of students selling tickets to the basketball games, the clatter of dishes in the school cafeteria—all symbols of carefree days which slipped heedlessly through their fingers to the tune of a teen-age rhumba. -7- OF THE GYM FLOOR In the art building students learned about the finer things of life. Art, library science, homemaking, sewing, history, and math were taught here. Here also were housed the superintendent and his staff assistants. Chemistry, biology, shop, and music were subjects learned in the science building, which had to be sturdy to withstand the shock of sour notes, noisy hammers, dissected animals and smelly chemistry experiments. -8- Provo High's main building, where every student found a place to hang his coat and make himself at home, contained the gymnasium, auditorium, and main office in addition to numerous class rooms. To The Seniors We dedicate this yearbook to the seniors of the class of 53— To their stumbling past which has led them gropingly through twelve years of seeking for the truth; To their confident present, which enables them to stand cleareyed and unafraid upon the threshold of your manhood and womanhood; To their glorious future, which cradles their dreams of the good life and a better world! -10- We Dedicate This Book The future materialized for seniors Jack and Carolyn Wright with the arrival of their baby. Donna Thurgood, Vice-President Sandra Graham, Secretary Janet Kenner, Business Manager Anne Cullimore, President STUDENT OFFICERS For the first time in the history of Provo High School the student body elected all girls to lead the year’s activities. Ann Cullimore, versatile and talented in numerous fields, was our prexy for 1953 . . . She was a competent director of student affairs and a capable leader. Donna Thurgood, our friendly, soft-spoken vice-president, was congenial and diligent in her efforts. Sandra Graham, lively and vivacious, kept the books'’ in perfect order as secretary of the student body. Janet Kenner, a likeable and efficient business manager, fought with our year's finances and kept P.H.S. out of the red. Our Leaders The lew making body of our school was the legislative council. Hayward, counseled and guided the girls on the campus, who felt that in her they had a real friend. Along with the hours of help and guidance she gave the girls, she taught English and acted as the chief advisor for the Girls' Organization. Sherman Wing, assistant school principal and teacher of English, also acted as Dean of Boys and advisor for all boys activities. Mr. Wing assisted Mr. Tregeagle, and in his absence took over the leadership of the school. Both students and faculty members in need of advice at all times found in Mr. Wing a winning smile and a friendly, helping hand. Anna Lou Jones s pleasant attitude and quiet efficiency kept the office and all business affairs in excellent shape. Only she could nave so capaoiy carea for an office with so many strings attached. An understanding friend to all was Dr. Lloyd C. Whitlock, student coordinator, who helped solve personalproblems that faced the students during the year. This was only one of the numerous services that Dr. Whitlock tendered the schools. Who Saved The Day Harold Boyack, clerk of the board of education, handled all the financial affairs of the Provo City Schools. This was no small job, as the expenditures for the year, including books, supplies, building costs, maintenance, and salaries, were well over a million dollars. Working with Mr. Boyack were Elma Penrod, secretary to the superintendent, Dorothy Woodward, secretary of school lunch, and Karma Hanseen, secretary to the clerk. Position of Superintendent of Buildings was filled by Justin Winkler. His competence and the efficiency of his work were evident in the upkeep of the buildings. Hungry students kept the cooks at the school cafeteria working hard to prepare tasty, tempting meals. Credit for planning and preparing the nutritious menus went to Mrs. Amy Taylor, district lunch supervisor, LaPearl Roberts, Ellen Row-berry, Pauline Thorne, Verda Daily, and Mary Farrer. Keeping the campus and the school building in tip-top condition was the job of Moroni Cottam, Wallace Casper, Andrew Mostert, and Glen Kirkwood. The students were grateful to these custodians for the uncomplaining hours they spent to keep the surroundings clean and beautiful. Provo City School Board members worked ceaselessly to improve the quality of our educational system. They were: Harold Boyack, Merrill Christopherson, Algie Ballif, Milton Marshall, Amos N. Merrill, and Ray Murdock. 'Greetings ' to Provo High School Students Yesterday, I used an hour to re-turn the pages of some earlier Provo High School yearbooks. This experience brought with it many delightful memories. Too often, we fail to completely enjoy the daily incidents of school at the moment they are happening. It was genuine fun to relive those days that were filled with so much pleasure. Each of you students and particularly you seniors will prize this yearbook. It will be a storehouse of memories for you. As the years go by, its record of happy high school incidents will become priceless. Cordially, J. C. Moffitt Superintendent It has been a great source of satisfaction to us to plan and work out activities with you during your high school years. You have shown your appreciation by your loyal support to the school, your diligent application to your work, and your desire to maintain continually higher character standards. We congratulate you on your achievements and growth in all areas of maturity. We hope sincerely that you will enjoy in the years to come the pages of this yearbook into which you have placed thought, vitality and original features all of record which is so commendable. Sincerely, D. V. Tregeagle Principal D. V. Tregeagle and Secretary Anna Lou Jones worked congenially to make our school run smoothly. -17- SOCIAL SCIENCE Bert Asay I World History I American Problems I American Hintory G.
