19 3 6 b EDITOR BUS I NESS MANAGER Published Annually by the Students of PROVO HIGH SCHOOL PROVO, UTAH orewora S INCERE appreciation is extended to Mr. We i g h t and Mr. Bench, Mr. Collett and the Art Department, the Chamber of Commerce, Graves Potter, Inc., lithographers, Larson Studio, and others who have made this book in its present form possible. Their cooperation, suggestions and help have assisted greatly to make this book different and complete. We present this Provost” to the students as a picture history of the years activity. The Staff A S charter issue of the Provost,” we dedicate this book to the memory of those stalwart characters who blazed the trail before us, and who have developed a rich heritage of material and spiritual wealth for us who follow. We have attempted to achieve in the theme of this book an illustrated record of progress made in this mountain empire from the time of the French trapper and Spanish priest to this day of industrialism. Our aim. in addition to picturing our current activities, is to keep alive some of the tradition of our forebearers. edica ion SCIENCE BUILDING ARTS BUILDING SEMINARY BUILDING en s ADMINISTRATION CLAS S ES ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS FEATURES REGISTRATION BETH BANKS IN MEMORIAM Greetings Provo High School A development to which we point with pride is the increasing ability of the Provo High School students to think for themselves. They arc acquiring a pattern of values that gives us confidence in our school as a training ground for enlightened, self-governing citizens. William McAndrew's charge that the American people are political morons incapable of self-government.” will. I hope, never describe a Provo High School graduate. Rarely does one see a student body that is working with such vigor to purge itself of dishonesty, discourtesy, the enslaving habits of smoking, the use of intoxicants, and conduct that would in any way brand our school with the smirch of vandalism, coarseness, or moral laxity. You have voluntarily undertaken these improvements as an outgrowth of your appreciation for the finer things of life. You deserve and shall receive the unqualified support of the Board of Education and the Superintendent in fostering such a splendid program. I like you for what you are. To be is greater than to have.” With all good wishes for your happiness. I am Sincerely yours. H. A. Dixon Superintendent Students of Provo High School Within the covers of this book you will find many of the delightful happenings of the school year of 1935-36. Participating in these events are the faces and names of your friends. As you first turn through the book you will be delighted because of the make-up and newness of the book. The events and students will then have relatively little meaning to you. They are recent and commonplace. A yearbook has its great value in time to come Check this statement in ten or fifteen years from now to determine its correctness: You will again turn over the pages to aid the memory in placing this or that girl or fellow. She or he will be living in a distant city, married, successful, etcetera. Then the events, a new meaning, an old and lasting friend.— may your yearbook serve each of you. Sincerely. MR. Norma Garrett was responsible for keeping all the important dates, Kathryn Pace kept account of all club meetings and Venice Redd kept the dates of the assemblies. Appointed by the executive council, Thaola Humphrey has been in charge of one of the busiest bureaus in school. Her duty was to get programs for our assemblies as well as programs to send to other schools. Aside from that, organizations about town have called upon her to obtain entertainment for some of their meetings. Stella Sumner, chairman of the lost and found department has taken care of the articles that were found and returned to her. It was no easy job and at times she had a whole locker full of unclaimed goods. She has helped to return many lost things to their rightful owners. i-l J - . + S ■ Tt — t tj - • “ €■•'. Usually little credit is given to those most responsible. In order that some appreciation may be shown these people, we are devoting this section of the book to an honor roll of service. Because of the limitations of such a list we have attempted to give mention only to those who best qualified, however, thanks is extended to each and every student who helped our school and its departments in any way. John Hilgendorf Band Provo High School Band, under the direction of Clair Johnson, was comprised of seventy-five members this year, an unusually large group. The band received the highest rating given to any high school band in the Regional Contest held at Spanish Fork. They were classified superior in playing, and highly superior in marching. The hand was unfailing in its support of the athletic contests at the school, and contributed greatly to the school spirit throughout the year. Provo High School Band was the only one in the state music contest at Logan to rate “highly superior in both maneuvering and playing. The Provo High Orchestra also rated highly superior in playing. Clair Johnson Director School Debaters Provo High School Debaters have shown up well this year in the several meets they have entered. Aside from numerous interschool debates. Provo entered eight debaters in the Weber College high school debate tournament. These consisted of four teams, two of which remained undefeated on the last day of the tournament. At the Brigham Young University speech tournament. Provo High entered two debating teams. These were John Stone and Merlin Slack and Darlene Hauser and Catherine Pardoe. The question for debate this year was ‘ ‘Resolved: that the several states should enact a legislation providing for a system of complete medical service available to all at public expense.” From front to back left to right—Duane Brown. Jim Winterton Ralph Winterton Kay Reese Athletic Manager In athletics Provo High School has made an enviable record. Provo placed second in the district in football and had more men on the mythical all region eleven than any school in the region. In basketball they took runnerup in the region to win a berth in the state tournament. While there they took the consolation championship and fifth place. This is the only school in the state to have taken the consolation championship twice. Glen Allen received official recognition as all-state center, the only Provo all-state player since Reed Lob Collins in 1926. In track the Bulldogs defended the state title which they captured the year before. Football The Provo High School boasted one of its strongest football teams of recent years for the 1935 season. A close 7-6 decision to Spanish Fork put them out of the running for the state championship, although the squad took all of its other league games by large margins. The team, coached by Glenn Simmons and Ivan Ike” Young, and co-cap-tained by Ben Marshall and Brig Mitchell, manifested great spirit and fine morale all through the season. Despite the loss of several luminaries from last year’s squad the present team amassed a total of 61.75 points in the regional meet to carry off first honors. Two state records and several regional marks were shattered in the meet. At the state relay meet at the University of Utah stadium the Provo relay teams set up some new marks in a brilliant performance. For the second consecutive year the team emerged from the State Track meet as champions. Provo’s total score counted thirty points. Payson and Davis tied for second and third places. The present track triumphs climax a fruitful year for the efforts of coaches Simmons and Young. A great deal of credit is due these two men for the development of such outstanding groups of athletes. IN MEMORIAH Dorothy Richmond Alice Dixon With Miss Richmond in charge and Alice Dixon as athletic manager, the girls’ department of physical education has had a varied program for the year of 1935-36. Beginning with a tournament in speed ball, they ended with tournaments in badminton and ping-pong. During the year a school basketball team was chosen with Jennie Mitchell as captain. They played games with Springville, Brigham Young High, and Mount Pleasant. More than one hundred girls participated in the annual dance revue, which was held the latter part of the winter. Other activities included the posture parade, an inter-squad basketball tournament, tumbling, softball, soccer, kickball and tennis. Girls’ Posture Parade The girls' posture parade, consisting of thirty-five girls, rated excellent in the Brigham Young University Invitational Track Meet. This was the highest rating possible in the competition.
