The monitor begins a series of screens showing how a two inch diameter object is turned into an intri- cate piece with numerous holes and slots. The com- puter asks if you wish to proceed, you input yes, and the computer numerical controled milling machine actually makes the object. Now picture yourself at Proviso taking one of the many classes offered by the Industrial Education Department that can teach you to actually operate machines like this one. Engineers, architechs, computer technicians, and many more ca- reers have their roots in classes taught at Proviso West. Some of these classes are: Architecture, Ma- chine Tool Technology, Electronics, Graphic Arts, Technical Drafting, Diversified Occupations, Auto- mative Technology, and Woodworking. WF ix.,-f Home economics is a course that involves cooking, sewing, and child development, These courses are available for all students at Proviso West and can benefit a person in several ways. Cooking involves more than just throwing a few things together. The students learn about the different appliances, and then how to use each correctly. They then learn about the different food groups and how to prepare each meal. Cooking classes teach the student to do more for themselves at home and will help them in the future. In sewing classes, people can learn the art of design. One will learn how to operate the sewing machines and all the tools of a designer. The students make everything from bathrobes to suit outfits. They even learn how to needlecraft projects. By learning to sew, a stu- dent can save money on buying clothes and even make some extra money by making clothes for other people. In child development, the students see current films on common household problems which teach them to care for children proper- ly. The course gives students experience in taking care of nursery school children by having the kids come to Proviso. This way, the students will get a first-hand look at how to care for a child. 27
