' nglish: he ey To The Future Proviso West High School offers a variety of English courses from basic reading and writing skills to advanced college prepara- tion classes. Freshmen gain familiarity with oral talks in the ba- sics of speech, while the sophomores learn Writing techniques. The juniors and seniors struggle through the year with their docu- mented papers, and all students are introduced to various types of literature. Depending on the courses taken, the students are ex- posed to British authors like Shakespeare and Milton, American authors like Hawthorne and Poe, or modern authors like Heming- way and Steinbeck. English presents the thoughts of the past and present for the understanding of the students.

Social Studies: The Ke To The Past The Social Studies department at Proviso West strives to bring students to a better un- derstanding of the world around them. Ameri- can society is a mixture of many different peo- pleg giving it a unique blend of traditions and cultures. In order to understand this society that we are a part of, We must understand how it has evolved over the years. Here at Proviso West, each student is required to take Ameri- can History to gain a better understanding of their own country. Courses involving histor- ies and civilizations from around the World are also offered. An increased knowledge of other cultures will not only help in dealing with peo- ple in foreign countries, but it will also help us to understand the people that make up our own society. AM Stud nd D 0 Junior and Senior year, gifted students are invit- ed to take American Studies or Developement of Western Thought. Both of these courses are two of the few interdisciplinary courses available at P.W. Since both courses emphasize student-di- rected learning, many units involve researching books and presenting them to the rest of the class in a creative manner. Individual projects and small group work and discussions are also featured. In American Studies, many of the units approach American culture through ethnicity, values and even violence. The course involves many field trips including the Morton Arboretum and Chin- atown. In D.O.W.T. Seniors take a two hour course that involves Honors English and Social Studies. The students read books from Western Civilization. The students study the evolution of government and religiong the students also present ideas in a creative manner. They have role-players, play presentations, and small and large group discus- sions. D.O.W.T. students take several field trips per semester also. They go to an occasional play or other exhibits that are appropriate to their course work. The great responsibility and the creative projects make Honors English a lot of fun. X 24
