Health ducatlon Do you know . . . . . what cardiopulmonary resuscitation is? . . . the early warning signals of a heart attack? . . . how to make the distress signal for choking? . . . what a cafe coronary is? Each year thousands of Americans die suddenly. Most of these deaths could be prevented if more people were trained to do CPR. The Health Education classes at Proviso West have incorporated one week of specialized training into the curriculum. Under the direction of Ms. Garramone, R.N. and health instructor and Fireman Frank Schnurstein of the Hillside Fire Department, students re- ceive training and learn techniques that help to save lives. Twenty- six students successfully completed the certification requirements during the first semester and earned the right to carry CPR cards. Health education is offered to all students and focuses on the study of human ecology and health, human growth and development, prevention and control of disease, public and environmental health, consumer health, safety education and disaster survival, mental health, personal health habits, and substance abuse. f ..

Proviso Honors Illinois State Scholars When students display outstanding ability in sports, they are immediately recognized and praised for their talent. These athletes receive many honors, scholarships, and nods of approval from their classmates. But what about the academic athletes of our school? These students put their minds through a vigorous workout everyday and are seldom told what a superior job they are doing. The MURAL would like to take this opportunity to con- gratulate the members of the National Honor Society and the winners of Illi- nois State Scholarship awards. These students have shown outstanding abil- ity and deserve a pat on the back. Front: Hope Larkin, Judith Lorenzen, Andra Ziemelis, Michele Pantone, Roda Baylon. In addition to these three special scholars, are three other students who have maintained a 3.9 grade point average throughout four years at Proviso. These three students, are Mathew Fitzgibbon and Erik Olsen, and Roger Romanelli Knot picturedb should also be com- mended. The MURAL would also like to congratulate this years National Honor Society's officers: Ulisses Gutierrez, Presidentg Roda Baylon, Vice-Presidentg Michele Pan- tone, Secretaryg and Erik Olsen, Treasurer. For many Juniors, the PSAT, SAT, and ACT tests are among the first steps towards college. These exams take a lot of time, effort, and energy. The questions range from simple to challenging questions. Although these tests may seem impractical to some, they do provide advantages for a few people. The PSAT is also a prerequisite for the National Merit Scholarship. Four students, Paul DelJudice, Bill Bick- ley, Roda Baylon, and Sam Gulino scored in the top 5176 of all who took the exam. Of these three made semi- finals, and two made finals. Sam and Roda now have a 4072, chance of receiving scholarships ranging from S2000 to full tuition. The three who made the semi-finals are pictured at the left receiving an award from Mr. Milano. These students are Roda Baylon, Sam Gulino, and Bill Bickley.

Proviso Welcomes Two New Deans To Proviso Ms. Montoya was born in New Mexico where she lived until she attended Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado where she earned her BA in sociology, anthro- pology, and physical educa- tion. She then went on to obtain her MA at Xavier University in Cincinnati in special education and her post graduate work was done at Northern Illinois University in the field of administration. Still more interesting, Ms. Montoya enjoys horseback riding in New Mexico and she has even taken airplane les- sons. Before becoming a dean here at Proviso West, she spent 7 years at Proviso East as a special education teacher and as a CWT Coordinator along with being the student council sponsor. Even though West is very different from East, Ms. Montoya especially likes working with the friendly people here at West, and she takes pride in fullfilling a traditionally male role. As a former graduate of Pro- viso West, Mr. Ulicny finds it interesting to be a dean in- stead of a student. His exper- ience as a resource teacher for behavior disorders has taught him to believe in discipline with a human face. Mr. Ulicny has set a fine example for all Proviso West students, past and present, by obtaining his BA at Miami University and both his MA in special education and his MA in educa- tion administration at Northeastern Illinois University. He has taught at Proviso East and at Proviso West, contributing his tal- ents at both schools as swim coach. Mr. Ulicny is active in golf and tennis and will forever be a dedicated Cubs fan. The 1985 MURAL Staff wishes Ms. Mon- Mass, Mr. Simmons, Mr. Gilbert, and Mrs, toya and Mr. Ulicny the best of luck as Dirks for all their help and encourage- deans here at Proviso West now and in ment over the years. the many years to come.
