TFT' World History students study the topography, geography, longitude, and lati- tude ot Earth. i i Mr. Paterson informs his Global Studies class about the economic, political, and geographical history of the world. ur K ,si Global Studies students are taught to reach ambitiously for the stars. Here, Mr. Paterson asks, Who wants an ice cream cone? History repeats itslf is a phrase which signifies the im- portance for a fine Social Studies department. As we live in the Nuclear Age, it is extremely important for the world's peoples to understand each other. Because it is necessary to cooperate with other countries in order to solve the world's problems, it is imperative that each country understand the other's history and economic situ- ation. But, in order for one country to understand another, it must first understand itself. U.S. History is required because every American should be consciously aware of our history. Our values and system of government are a by-product of many different peoples. As this country heads for the year 2000, we need to understand what direction we are headed in. World History, World Civiliza- tion, and Global Studies give the student the opportunity to understand other countries' cultures, histories, and val- ues. Consequently, the Proviso student is ready to handle the enormous task of surviving in a world where Commu- nism and Democracy battle and where economical and social problems arise everyday.

Equations, Exponents, Exercises, And Euclid As this world becomes increasingly dependent on com- puters, the world needs mathematicians who can take a problem and logically and deductively solve it. The equations, most of which were formed by Euclid, Aris- totle, and Galileo, are studied indepthly so that the problem solver can fully understand the conclusion he draws. Proviso West offers a wide-ranging excellent Math pro- gram with courses geared for every type of student. Algebra Plus, SDL Geometry, Advanced AIgebra-Trig- nometry Honors, and SDL Calculus create the 4-year Honors program which begins with a solid algebra base, adds a geometry base, and continues to build through Adv. Alg.-Trig. Honors and finally the study of calculus. For the college bound math student, Proviso's math program is exceptional. Aside from the Honors program, Proviso offers sound foundations in Algebra, Geometry, Alg.-Trig., and College Algebra courses, which are also geared for the college bound student. Anymore, it is not solely the facts, figures, and formulas that teachers insist upon, but also because of the fast- paced technological world, the Proviso math student applies himself and his facts and figures in order to solve problems which face him. Mr. Head answers Xan inquiry from the floor on a difficult problem. Contemplating the solution set, Mr. Chipman anticipates a question from his class. Mrs. Brown gives an explanation for a complex SDL Geometry prob- lem.

Foreign Language Brings World Closer Together Today's world is growing smaller and smaller each day due to advances in communication, medicine, and businessg so, it is very important and helpful to be aware of the entire world's peoples in order to communicate. In these times of world confusion and disagreement, the world must be able to communicate to resolve situations. The Foreign Language Department at Proviso West gives students the opportunity to bring their world closer through communications and an understanding of foreign culutres. Offer- ing four years of German, Spanish, and French classes, the Provi- so student is able to be more acquainted with different cultures in America, as well as foreign cultures in Europe and Mexico. By bringing the world closer through an understanding of foreign languages, it is likely that the future American will be able to communicate with people of other nations in hopes for a more peaceful and secure world. Herr Maas spricht zu die Klasse. Dos alumnos hablan de la tarea. Esta chica esta estudiando en el libro. 22 The American student is excited and enlightened upon learning a foreign lan guage. Les etudiants aiment le classe de francais.
