From the basic background courses in general science to the complexities of physics, slide rules and formulas, the science department at Proviso VV est sought to pre- parc students to better understand the problems which increasing scientific knowledge has presented and con- tinues to present. Though a few freshmen were per- mitted to go directly into biology, most acquired in general science a basis from which to choose their later science courses. Biology l this year included the tradi- tional insect collections, laboratory dissections, and lec- tures supplementcd by the liberal use of teaching films. Biology ll, an elective course, provided opportunity for collegeflevel worlc in the lite sciences. Plans are in 1 preparation, however, for the introduction next year of some of the new approaches to biological science devel- oped by the Biological Curriculum Study. Chemistry and physics, which are open to juniors and seniors, are of particular interest to the college-bound students. Experimental use of new approaches is also being con- templated in these areas for next year. ln connection with improved science instruction, Westls science de- partment, along with eight other suburban high schools, participated this year in a study conducted by the University ol Florida. Members ol? the physics classes took the Holzinger-Crowder Unifactor Test in Septem- ber and in May to assist in assessing the effectiveness ol' l the traditional as compared with the newer presentations of physical concepts developed by the Physical Science Study Committee.
