Jerry Bulmann and Coach Gilbert confer on offensive strategy. Hard running halfback begins a long gain against Elgin behind block- ing led by Jerry Nyckel. Despite excellent coaching by Donald Maechtle and his staff, the varsity gridmen completed a season of three wins against five losses. The Cats opened the season with a hard-earned 13-O victory against the traditional opening day rival, Elgin. The Cats then traveled to Prospect where they electrified the crowd with a 13-7 come-from-behind upset victory. The season was high lighted by the homecoming game. Both the offensive and the defensive teams played spirited football and de- feated a tough VVest Leyden squad in the thrilling 12-7 contest. The season ended with the Panthers playing host to Niles Vvest. The Cats and Niles played even football for most of the game, but the clock ran out with Proviso owning the pigskin and Niles owning a 13-7 margin. Larry Scortino, who was a stand-out on the defensive line, was named to the All-Conference Team. Scortino was also voted Most Valuable Senior by his teammates. Gerry Schultz, playing offensive and defensive tackle, was voted as honorable mention in the All-Conference voting. The junior varsity, playing fine football, proved to be the best junior varsity squad that VVest has seen. Although the jay-vees lost a num- ber of players to the varsity, they posted a fine 3-4-1 season record. Playing tough football, the sophomores won the league championship with a 4-3-1 record. The freshmen teams promised a good football future for West. The freshman AH squad posted a 5-2 season, and the HB team posted a 4-2-1 season record.
