A student wbo wislied to become a member of the Choir needed previous singing experience, and be had to pass a liiglily competitive audition. Throughout tlie year Clioir members performed for clubs, cburcbes, and otber community organizations. ln tbe spring, the Cboir toured local schools to interest eiglitb grade stu- dents in musical programs made available to tbem at Proviso. Soloists and ensembles were cbosen by Mr. Bell to represent Xvest at the Illinois State Music Festival. Cirls' Chorus trained one hundred-sixty sophomores, juniors, and seniors, who qualified on the basis of a musical tryout. Cirls shovving outstanding vocal quali- ties were given opportunities as vocal soloists. The Chorus gave their perennial Christmas and spring con- certs this year, which increased the experience of the girls, and stimulated their interest to participate in other choral activities. ln addition, these concerts gave some valuable opportunities for the Chorus to perform to a more critical audience than usual. Annually cho- sen lfrom the Advanced Cirls' Chorus were tvvo ensem- bles which participated with other schools in community programs and entertained West's pupils at assemblies! and other various functions throughout the school year. The ensembles ended their year by competing in the State Music Contest, ably representing Proviso West.

Mixed Chorus Provides New Vocal Opportunities Introduced for the first time this year was 21 new choral group, the Mixed Chorus. It consisted ol? approximate- ly sixty memhers: hoys with previous experience in Freshmen Boys' Chorus, and girls who participated in Cirls, Chorus or Advanced Cirls Chorus. hlemhers received advanced training in vocal methods hv being introduced to mixed choir music. The group performed at the Christmas and Spring Choral Festivals held in the Proviso East Auditorium. An opportunity for more students to have choir experience has heen opened bv the Mixed Chorus, which also serves us ri prerequisite to membership in the Choir.
