Forty-nine of Proviso East's teachers heeded this call as they joined forces at Proviso West. Watching this fruit basket upset, the Proviso East teachers welcomed thirty-three new instructors to the staff - which made a total of 180 faculty members. The day before students entered the grounds, teachers followed a busy schedule of workshops, general meetings, and work agendas. Of the 180 East teachers, 141 have earned master's degrees, one has a Ph.D., eight have M.A.'s plus thirty hours, while four have M.A.'s plus fifteen hours. The halving of Proviso Township freshmen and sopho- mores facilitated the work of some teachers. Fourteen hundred fewer students and thirty-two fewer classes at Proviso East ap- reciably eased the crowded conditions of last year. But junior and senior classes remained large and kept their classrooms full. In the spring, counselors took over the planning of student programs which had been the homeroom teacher's job. In spite of its size, the Proviso faculty has plenty of op- portunity to work and to exchange ideas and good times. With committees to join and clubs to sponsor, teachers never lack extracurricular activities. They even have a Committee on Com- mittees, which outlines all the assignments of annual extra- curricular duties that the teachers perform. The awkwardness which always accompanies rapid growth and expansion diminished as teachers got acquainted. At a Hotel Sherman dinner, held by the Board of Education, Prin- Robert Feeley, B.S. Helen Feller, M.A. English l, 3 English 1, 4 cipals Holt and Stubbs introduced the new teachers to the rest of the faculty. The faculty found its work and cooperation paying off as Dr. james Conant's report showed that Proviso measured up well to his criteria of an effective comprehensive high school. In mid-year the entire Proviso Township faculty - pri- mary and secondary schools - divided into departments to con- tinue the coordination program begun in the fall, this giving Proviso students the benefits of a unified twelve-year program. During the year Mrs. Frances MacGuire, English, left the staff and Mrs. Dorothy Bergstrom took her place until second semester. Others who resigned include Miss Lois Ackland. English, and Mr. Bracewell, in industrial arts. Mr. Donald Cassalino and Miss Joan Cleland, both English teachers, and Mrs. Ethel Halloran, nurse, joined the faculty the second semester. After long service to Proviso, Mr. Harold Monilaw of the mathematics department has decided to retire at the end of this school year. Four teachers, Mrs. Colleen Kullmer in social studies, Mrs. Fern Luedecke in the library, Miss Helen Chrison in English, and Miss Alicia Crow in the girls' physi- cal education department, will resign at the end of this year. Two teachers, Mr. Dewey Adair and Mr. Harvey Welsh, both in commercial department, won the twenty-five-year watch awards-thus climaxing years of devotion and work for Proviso.
