A cheery smile illuminates the work and person- ality of Superintendent Knoeppels girl Friday, Mrs. Freida Zochert. lt extends a friendly hello to every- one who enters her othce. A graduate of Lewis Institute and Bryant-Stratton College, Mrs. Zochert has performed duties in our main ollice since l947. In her work as secretary to the superintendent, she takes care of all his appoint- ments, personal correspondence, and all bulletins from his ofhce to the school. She also keeps a file of teachers' certificates and records for both schools. . v... . QL Q DQS 4: we ss at . f 'Z 1 X .Til . -xv - SUPERINTENDENT KNOEPPEL stands at his desk ready to praise the cooperation of students and faculty in starting the new plan. Superintendent Assumes Double Duties Superintendent Leroy J. Knoeppel seldom has a free mo- ment. for it takes time and patience to manage successfully a school as large as Proviso East and to direct the development of Proviso XV est. Establishing a two-school operation has proved a difficult task since Proviso is one of the pioneers in this field. Mr. Knoeppel is trying to develop a distinctive character for each school and still keep all the administrative policies the same. Concerned with improving learning and teaching condil tions at both Provisos, Mr. Knoeppel has an eye on the future as well as the present. He must keep a constant vigil to assure that the faculty is divided on an equitable basis and that he devotes equal time to the activities of each school. Two schools require more of his time as well as double his activities. Page ll?

Knoeppel, Business Manager Hattie N. Haupt, Mr. Ralph J. Gust, Mr. Neil J. Gilles, and Dr. Louis S. Seno listen to Dr. Ralph Barton, standing, present a plan concerning another phase of the two-school program. School is out and summer begins. Wlhat a relief to look forward to three months of vacationing! Everyone relaxes except the Board of Education, which must continue its year- round duties. Approving appointments and bills, awarding contracts, deciding on major repairs and new construction- these represent only a few of the important responsibilities placed before the board for consideration. The building of Proviso West, the largest project ever attempted by this board, reached its successful completion with a dedication and open house in November. This culmi- nated the plans that were begun in 1950. Using the experience gained in their business and pro- fessions. these men resolve many problems of school finance, institutional policies, and business interests for Proviso. DR. BARTON, president of the Board of Education, scans the mail and signs orders in preparation for monthly board meeting. Page 18

ssis'ron'rs Correlclfe Complex Program Vitally concerned with the record of each Proviso student, Miss Virginia Terhune, administrative assistant, approaches each of her tasks with painstaking care. Under Miss Terhune's efficient guidance, students hear the daily bulletins, listen to assemblies, and receive their program cards and report cards without thinking of all the work involved in providing these curricular aids. In addition to these duties with the records, Miss Terhune takes charge of stu- dent enrollment, summer school, and the program planning for College Day. IP ASSEMBLING the control panel Miss Virginia Terhune prepares the IBM machine for reports. Page 20 Assistant Superintendent Charles C. Holt shows a friendly interest for everyone in the cooperative atmosphere in which he super- vises faculty and students. In spite of faculty meetings and confer- ences which forever interrupt his schedule, Mr. Holt has time for teacher recruitment and substitution, program planning, curricu- lum, and enrollment. With uncanny awareness of what is go- ing on and a knowledge of students and faculty, Mr. Holt shows vital concern for every student and teacher at Proviso East. Having received his BA degree from Southeast Missouri State College and his MA from the University of Illinois, Mr. Holt is finishing his doctorate at the Uni- versity of Illinois. He is now serving as vice-president of the Illinois Association of Secondary School Principals. if FITTING events into the schedule, Assistant Superintendent C. C. Holt rechecks his calendar. Supervising student behavior with a quiet but firm manner, Dr. Leslie Remley, Dean of Students, makes the final decisions on disciplinary problems referred to him by teachers, counselors, and ad- ministrators. He also directs the policies pertaining to the student body. Dr. Remley came to Proviso in 1931 to teach in the science department and to serve as football and basketball coach. In 1938 he became the Direc- tor of Athletics and in 1957 he assumed his new duties as dean. fl REVIEWING A REPORT, Dean Remley considers all aspects of the case before he interviews the student.
