Did you ever dream what would happen if someone reversed all the street signs in your community, and then expected you to carry on a normal day's business? If so, then you have just a faint idea of the problems that confronted Proviso East's administrators and faculty in the fall of 1958. Secretaries began to shudder each time their phones rang. Finally, biting their tongues, they replied patiently: No, ma'am. This is not Proviso West. Yes, I'm sure. Call LI 4-5400. Yes, ma'am. I know it's very confusing. You're welcome. Try repeating that about thirty or forty times daily, and you'll begin wondering, as they did, where you really are after all! Everyone makes jokes about armchair executives except the executives themselves. Messrs. Knoeppel and Holt almost forgot how to sit in one, for the frightening task of managing two high schools, each with its own unique problems, kept them moving constantly. In addition, the entire administrative staff faced the process of adjusting, not only to a dual operation, but to the first year of complete use of the IBM system for records and grading. The work of the faculty, of course, was cut almost in half by the opening of the new school-except for a few unusual complications. What did you say, son? You think you're in the wrong room? But there is no D105g let's see your program card. You belong . . . at Proviso West! ! Page 16

Top Brass Inificifes Two-School Plan MEMBERS OF THE BOARD of Education: seated, Mt. Robert A. Young, Mr. Fred E. Meyer. Mr. Sallust J. DeRose, Attorney Louis Ancel, Superintendent Leroy J. Knoeppel, Business Manager Hattie N. Haupt, Mr. Ralph J. Gust, Mr. Neil J. Gilles, and Dr. Louis S. Seno listen to Dr. Ralph Barton, standing, present a plan concerning another phase of the two-school program. School is out and summer begins. Wlhat a relief to look forward to three months of vacationing! Everyone relaxes except the Board of Education, which must continue its year- round duties. Approving appointments and bills, awarding contracts, deciding on major repairs and new construction- these represent only a few of the important responsibilities placed before the board for consideration. The building of Proviso West, the largest project ever attempted by this board, reached its successful completion with a dedication and open house in November. This culmi- nated the plans that were begun in 1950. Using the experience gained in their business and pro- fessions. these men resolve many problems of school finance, institutional policies, and business interests for Proviso. DR. BARTON, president of the Board of Education, scans the mail and signs orders in preparation for monthly board meeting. Page 18
