Did you ever dream what would happen if someone reversed all the street signs in your community, and then expected you to carry on a normal day's business? If so, then you have just a faint idea of the problems that confronted Proviso East's administrators and faculty in the fall of 1958. Secretaries began to shudder each time their phones rang. Finally, biting their tongues, they replied patiently: No, ma'am. This is not Proviso West. Yes, I'm sure. Call LI 4-5400. Yes, ma'am. I know it's very confusing. You're welcome. Try repeating that about thirty or forty times daily, and you'll begin wondering, as they did, where you really are after all! Everyone makes jokes about armchair executives except the executives themselves. Messrs. Knoeppel and Holt almost forgot how to sit in one, for the frightening task of managing two high schools, each with its own unique problems, kept them moving constantly. In addition, the entire administrative staff faced the process of adjusting, not only to a dual operation, but to the first year of complete use of the IBM system for records and grading. The work of the faculty, of course, was cut almost in half by the opening of the new school-except for a few unusual complications. What did you say, son? You think you're in the wrong room?
