Where Is The . . There! The last Workman set down his tools and gazed at an endless expanse of hall. A lone figure opened the door, peered in, and entered the corridor. ln a few hours, the hall echoed the footsteps and words of 4200 such figures - September, 1958. At Proviso West, bewildered freshmen roamed wild-eyed through twisting passages while sophisticated sophomores non- chalantly became just as lost. Soon the novelty wore off and Provisoites turned to the serious business of studying - the girl across the aisle, the scene out the window, and occasionally even a book. In spite of high hopes and fond wishes, Proviso students. like the U.S. mail, went through snow, hail. sleet - and semes- ter exams. Having taken winter's worst in stride, they breezed through the responsibili- ties of parenthood, tby proxy, that ish as Girls' League adopted Phan Thi Hien, Vietnamese foster child. Moving on from this Oriental doll to stuffed dolls, Provisoites keyed themselves to the activity and enthu- siasm of the annual doll project. Bloodshot eyes and a sudden increase in coffee sales marked the end of first semester as mid-year exams awakened a burning de- sire for hidden knowledge iand passing gradesl. From work, work, work the tempo changed to romance, sweet romance with the Valentine dance highlighting winter's dreariness. But wait! XVhat's this? Chloro- form Uncle Elizabeth? Oh. no! Call out the army . . . the navy '... wait a minute! X5Uho's Uncle Elizabeth? Anyone who attended the senior class play, I Remember Mama . found out to their evident pleasure. Closing the season, Proviso's varsity cagers gave winter's depressing spirits a final slap in the face, dis- playing undampened enthusiasm and a rc! gional title trophy. Page 9
