6U'lgll6lgQ Communication - represents the greatest asset or the most troublesome barrier between peo- ples of the world. Since 1910 the aim of the Language depart- ment has remained unchanged - to overcome this barrier between peoples. The department originally offered upperclassmen courses in Latin, French, and Spanish, with enrollment opened to all students by 1918. In 1920 German became part of the program and clubs began for all the languages. Today the department takes pride that all its teachers have had some foreign travel and can use their personal experiences to supplement textbook materials and films. Then too, by en- tertaining foreign speakers, corresponding with pen pals, and participating in Christmas and Pan-American Day observances, the stu- dents acquire a knowledge of customs of other nationalities. f il. l Q F s P by 2525 . ,gf Nowadays the study of a foreign language not only increases one's ability to speak and If-A to understand a foreign tongue, but also gives him more of an understanding of world prob- f TX -4 , lems and his role in them. ll f'XX J ,Q -J 2 VX X 1 T ' K . jfxlp: 1: gp y s l i il 1 9 ix 'tix sf ' is a fa? Since 1911 Proviso has offered home eco- nomics to its future homemakers. Then known as Domestic Science, the department undertook a variety of activities such as the study of food planning, clothing construction, and the mak- ing of clothes for needy Belgian children. ln 1951 the activities of a home economics club added to the student's classroom knowl- edge. Candy sales, style shows, and entertain- ment of clubs from other schools highlighted the group's activities. The current program provides training in foods, clothing, family living, and home planning. Girls acquire their training in com- pletely modern and home-like classrooms. The courses in foods assist the girls to plan attractive and economical meals for their fam- ily and friends.
