M cience Experiment - through experiment, science corrects the old creeds and sweeps away our infantile convictions. In 1918 a strange contraption called the wireless met with discovery. As the world marveled at this wondrous invention, Proviso's 1 young scientists scrutinized it also. Three years ' passed, science moved on, and with it Proviso acquired ten times the equipment of the year 1918. Clubs began to spring up. The teachers f - organized them through the classes and held . meetings once every two weeks during classes. Essay contests, poster contests, and field trips typify the numerous activities in which the clubs indulged.. ff -. Xi, K ,cy ' R X. ,ga ociaf .giucbeff Humanity - supersonic speed and the possi- bilities of atomic power constantly make com- munication easier and faster. As our contacts with the varied aspects of human nature widen, so must our understanding of ourselves and others. In 1918 the Social Studies department, in order to develop this understanding in its stu- dents, taught three courses. Today a staff of seventeen teaches a total of thirteen subjects. While all of the present-day courses deal with the humanities, two of the most recent addi- tions, psychology and sociology, concern them- selves directly with people, their behavior, and their problems. To further supplement classroom activity, numerous extracurricular groups have spon- sored a variety of worthwhile projects through the years. Talks by guest speakers and discus- sions on current events rank high among these. Thus, with well-timed expansion and extra- curricular activities, the Social Studies depart- ment strives to develop a spirit of understand- ing and cooperation in its students -- two qualities so necessary in out times. , g f Pa f .. ,Y -W rl. fggglam ,M .
