By providing practice and training for youth, the English department strives to per- fect each student's ability in the use of his language. Originating in 1910, the department consisted of two teachers and 254 pupils. By 1918 speech and drama groups appeared as well as the first senior class play, Shakespeare's As You Like It. The department also spon- sored such clubs as the Delphic Literary So- ciety and the English Cabinet, an organization which promoted the use of correct English in all classes. Now larger than ever before, the depart- ment boasts thirty-nine teachers and 4,849 pupils. Offering twenty-three courses with training in journalism, speech, literature, dra- matics, and secretarial English, it supplies the needs of each pupil. Thus, the English staff attempts to give to its students a thorough understanding of our English language and an appreciation of our literary heritage. M., kia' ' 1.4. X fa vf r L.
