ssistants Appl Per onal Touch VIRGIL G. CATLIN October 10, 1891 - May 2, 1957 Though tinged with irony, excerpts from the l'rovi's original writeup in this space stand as a rudimentary eulogy' to the memory of Virgil G. Catlin, who died suddenly' of a heart attack on May' 2, l957. H. . . served hy Mr. Catlin for nearlv thirty'-nine years . . .N . . plans to retire this year . . .ii 'His accomplish- ments will have a lasting ellectf' N. . . we thank him for his part in making Proviso greater . . .H These frag- ments emerge as indications of the dedicated spirit of a nian who devoted his life to teaching. For the last three years Mr. Catlin filled the position of administrative assistant. Prior to this. he was head of the science department for twenty' years. His education included various degrees at North- western the llniversitv of Chicago as well as na- tural science work at Morton Arhoretum. A memher of the planning committee for the Allerton House Confer- ences on Education. the National lfducation Associa- tion. the lllinois lfdueation Association. and the Illinois Biological Association. he was a township leader in state and local allairs. He further served as Sunday' School superintendent. teacher. and memher of the hoard of religious education at the First Baptist Church. president ol the Community Christian Council. and lieutenant in civilian defense. The suddenness of a death often rohs us of perspec- tive. ln lVlr. Catlinis case. as one fellow teacher put it, 'alle lived a full and varied life. Page ll CHARLES C. TAGGART 4'Working individually' with the hoy s and girls, con lesses Assistant Superintendent Charles C. Taggart, 'cis what l enjoy doing most at Proy iso. Mr. Taggart. who has served the school for thirty- eight years. assumed his present position in W33. Despite the fact that hc has recently devoted much of his energy' to the coordination ol' plans for Proviso Nvest. the general organization here at proviso constitutes his chiel duty. l-le handles enrollment, schedules classes. prepares the school calendar, and supervises teacher suhstilutions. His twelve years' experience as a memher ol the College Admissions Counselors enahles him to assist students with their college plans and with scholarship tests. Having spent forty'-three years as a teacher. he is well qualified to advise Proviso graduates to continue their education hy' seeking information ey ery' day' ol their lives. Mr. Taggart humorously' hesitates to contrast todayis student with vesterday's. hut he eventually' admits that our generation represents an improvement. sfrmaftff as

Wir. Knoepp l Pl ns Future Proviso ,,7 ,, , Leroy' J. Knoeppel came to Proyiso three years ago with previous experience as a teacher-coach. principal-teacher. superintendent of a unit school for seventeen years. and then superintendent of a medium-sized high school. Both his educational background and his experience as a head administrator have qualified him as an educator well able to co- ordinate student, community, Board, and faculty' effort to greater educational service. Mr. Knoeppel, as does the faculty, believes definitely' that students should have a responsibility in the administration of the school. He likewise believes that the community should know the policies goy erning its educational program and should aid in determining them. Not only does he feel his obligation to the student, the faculty. the Board, and the community. but he also manifests a yital interest in a coordination program yyith both elementary schools and colleges. His long range plans include development of guidance and the improvement and expansion ol the curriculum so that the citizens of Proviso 'foxy n- ship may more successfully' fulfill their responsibilities to secondary school youth. Believing that Proyiso is one of the outstanding high schools in the nation, Mr. Knoep- pel senses a challenge to extend eyery possible educational opportunity to the youth of Proyiso Toyynship. Page 10 Mrs. Frieda Zochert is the very versatile secretary to Superintend- ent Knoeppel. Her many duties require her to care for his personal correspondence and appointments, schedule school functions, keep teachers? records. and issue bulle- tins originating from this office. v

From seven teachers in 1910, the faculty grew along with Proviso to its present number of 183. Twenty-two new teachers greeted Proviso students for the first time in September. Four graduates of Proviso found themselves in familiar surroundings. Nine received degrees from the University of Illinois. ln addition to the classroom instructors, Mr. Everett Small, sophomore boys? counselor, and Mr. Derrill Brown, truant officer, fill positions on the new roster. Seeing many generations of Proviso students pass before them, thirty-one teachers have now served Proviso for at least twenty-five years. 1n 1956 Dr. Remley and Mr. Bergstrom received the gold watches recog- nizing the silver anniversary. After-school activities occupy much time for most faculty members. Sponsoring publications, directing plays or various activities, and coaching athletic teams are some of the extra-curricular duties of the faculty. Without the hel of facult advisers, or anizations would lack the benefit of ast ears, ex erience. P Y g P Y P Not only is it the aim of the faculty to instill in the students the questions and answers of the world, but more important, a line sense of values, higher moral standards, and the ability to analyze a situation with a clear, open, and intelligent mind. To replace retirees and to supplement the teaching staff three newcomers joined the staff the second semester. They are Miss Margaret Eubanks, Physical Educationg Miss Mabel Shoch, Mathematics, and Mrs. Carol Waite, Commercial. Page 12
