To the Student Body of the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art Recent years have witnessed a great upsurge of interest in vocational and technical training in this country and elsewhere. This reflects the rapid industrialization of our economy, the greater use of new machines, the development of the wizardry of electronics, and the creation of a host of new forms of equipment. The students of a school such as the Institute are in the midst of this transformation and by their presence indicate that they have an awareness not only of their personal need to be fitted for skilled employment, but of the need of their country for persons trained to meet the challenges of change and expansion. The Department of Education is proud of the Institute and of the contribution it makes to the welfare of all. Since this contribu¬ tion is actually made through the students who receive their training there it follows that we are proud of its students and graduates. To those who are about to complete their courses and enter into their life work we extend greetings and best wishes, with every confidence that they, as their predecessors have done, will bring credit to the Institute and to the Province of Alberta. Yours sincerely.

A MESSAGE TO THE STUDENTS FROM Hon. A. O. Aalborg Minister of Education 2

Provincial Institute of Technology and Art EDUCATION BUILDING 13th AVENUE and IOth STREET N.W. CALGARY — ALBERTA TO THE STUDENTS OF THE CLASS OF ' 61: When the Institute moved in 1922 from the Colonel Walker School in east Calgary to the present campus, the Honourable Perren Baker, the then Minister of Education, issued formal invitations to numerous people to attend the official opening ceremonies of the new buildings. On the inside cover of the invitation the Minister thoughtfully included the following quote by Thomas H. Huxley: Education is the instruction of the intellect in the laws of nature, under which name I include not merely things and their forces, but men and their ways; and the fashioning of the affections and of the will into an earnest and loving desire to move in harmony with those laws. For me, education means nothing more nor less than this. Anything which professes to call itself education must be tried by this standard, and if it fails to stand the test, I will not call it education, whatever may be the force of authority, or of numbers upon the other side. These words may be said to have been the goal toward which the Institute programme of courses has been directed over the years and will, I trust continue to be directed during the years to come. If the students of former years have reached the goal then their attendance at the Institute will have been worthwhile. It is now our sincere hope that the graduates of the class of ' ' 61 will ultimately reach this goal. Not immediately, because this is the work of a lifetime. As you leave the Institute we trust that as a result of your having been here you will inevitably move toward that state of desire and understanding and harmony so ably described by Thomas Huxley. If you do this you will, I am sure, be successful. This is our wish for you. ' E. wTWood Principal
