SO LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE BEFORE MEN THAT THEY MAY SEE YOUR GOOD WORKS AND GLORIFY YOUR FATHER WHO IS IN HEAV- EN. QSt. Matthew, 5: 14-16, We the students of Providence High School, realize that as the youth of today we are the leaders of tomorrow. As tomorrow's light we can shine brightest if we choose careers that will enable us to influence large numbers of people in their thought and consequent action. In recognition of this fact, we of the annual staff choose to base our 1959-60 PHILOTHEAN on a book entitled UCAREERS THAT CAN CHANGE YOUR WORLDQ, by Father james T. Keller, S. J., founder of the Christophers. The aim and particular purpose of this book and of the Christophers is to emphasize what one person can do, with Godis help, to raise the standards of the spheres of influence which shape the destiny of all men, especially in U government, 21 education, 3j social service, LQ labor relations, 59 literature and GJ entertainment. In this book Father Keller shows that by placing good Amer- icans in positions in these fields we can provide the moral power and strength needed to allow our nation to grow in good, healthy surroundings. Father Keller also stresses that each and every one of us has the ability to hold one of these positions, and it is our duty as Americans to utilize this faculty. Providence High School has given us the incentive to form the beliefs and ideals which will guide us and empower us to shine brightly before all men. Through variety of curricula and extracurricular of- ferings, and the character training given us during these four years, we are alloted the power to be better prepared to recognize and select a career that can change the World ref... To Father James T. Keller, S. J., founder of the Chrktopherg and to the success of the Christophor Movement, we gratefully dedicate the 1959-1960 PHILOTHEAN. Octo ber 14, 1959 Dear Mis s Logan, We were happy to hear from you and to learn that you have chosen The Chri. stophersu for the theme of your schoo1's annual. It is truly encouraving to learn that our work is being met with such enthusiasm and an inspiration to carry on with more zeal than ever! we'l1 hope to see the fruits of your efforts and you may be assured of our prayers for the success of this project! Blessings to you, Miss Logan as well as all your fellow students at Providence High School! Although deeply involved in daily activities, P.H.S.'ers enjoy the scenic landscape lying just outside their classroom windows. From north, south, east, and west, the Providence campus presents a striking picture with its rolling green lawns, huge pecan trees, mansion-like convent, and quaint courtyard. For many years, and now in 1960, these symbols of beauty and joy create an atmos- phere of peace at P.H.S. The Augusta Street entrance to P.H.S. offers this panoramic view of the building front and the southwest campus. Side by side, the convent and P.H.S.'s distinctive symbol, the cross, dominate this view of the middle of the campus. Full rustling trees peacefully shade P.H.S.'s southeast entrance during the noon hours. PH S 'ers DELIGHT IN SCENIC CAMPUS Blue skits smile over P.H.S. as PHILOTHEAN editor Mary Logan and her assistant, Carol Howard, chat in the foreground, wliilc Sister Miirtliii Ann convcrscs with Anita Pzitglsso near thc inain cn- trance. Providence's main en- trance and driveway are a bee-hive of activity during pre-school hours as PHS'ers chat with their friends from Central Catholic. 9 Every person, no matter what his position, can contri- bute to the unity and organiza- tion need to make the world better. The archdiocesan sys- tem of Catholic schools, of which Providence High is a part, is an example of this organization and unity, under His Excellency, Archbishop Robert E.Lucey, director of all activity in the archdiocese. The superintendent of Cath- olic schools in the diocese is His Excellency, Auxiliary Bish- op Stephen A. Leven. Work- ing closely with Bishop Leven are the diocesan school su- pervisors, Sister Marietta, C.D. P., and Sister Francis Therese, C.C.V.I., who concern them- selves with the I systematiza- tion and closer integration of the schools under them. Providence High School, as the largest private girls' in the diocese, contributes greatly to the apostolic work of the diocese. The executive heads of Providence are Sister Mau- reen, C.D.P., principal of the school, and Sister Florence Marie, C.D.P., superior of the school. These two nuns by their untiring efforts com- bined with those of all the faculty, unite and correlate all phases of student life. Thus Providence aims in its educa- tional program to educate whole personalities who will readily take their places in this modern world. The members of this organization chosen by the faculty, are judged on their scholarship, character, leadership, and service-qual- ifications closely related to the aims of Christian education. Pope Pius XI has said that this aims to educate the whole per- son-physically, spiritually, intel- lectually, morally, socially for supernatural living. True schol- arship can develop only when desirable character traits are growing simultaneously. Thus one comes to know her place in relation to God, self, neighbor, environment. From this knowl- edge guided by the will of char- acter it is inevitable that service and leadership will become part of the individual. Thus N.H.S. members stand at the fore where they have the ideals of knowing, of loving, of giging, and of self-dedication. l ill by R in feiwi-WZ I xml Maybe sonicday well lime one ton, Freshmt-n Kathleen Mcfilung and Vivian Heyc .xdmire the lIlll7Ul1L f1l3lDLIlS M 1 probutiont-rs Shirley Ncugrbauer and Sandra Isaacs. The CYO's main concern is the for- mation of Christian character through participation in wholesome social and recreational activities, and the organization prides itself on excellent cultivation of the physical health of Catholic youths. Answering their questions is a former P.H.S. 'er, class of '57, Judy Loverde, who in her employment with the Chamber of Commerce is engaged in secretarial work in one of Father Keller's key careers. The juniors sense that by embracing such a career, women can develop a force for good that nothing will be able to stop, that will sweep over the country and to the farthermost pans of the earth? For those interested in a business career, typing, shorthand, and book- keeping are offered along with the general subjects of religion, English, and American History. College-minded juniors are offered such courses as geometry, Latin, Span- ish, journalism, and speech. They work together in the junior spirit of co-operation to make their project: the Junior-Senior Prom, and the Senior Ring Ceremony successful and memorable. They look to graduation with ming- led feelings of pride and a little un- certainty, for less than a year separates them from their first encounters with real adult responsibility.
