QIZIQZNS swam Mike Keys are like magic words for they open treasures of memories, storehouses of wealth, and gateways to happiness. To us Our Blessed Mother is the Key that opens God's treasure house of graces. Throughout the book, the keyhole symbolizes the school, Providence High. It is through the school that Mary, the Key, opens up the gateway to her Son. One hundred years ago, December 8, 1854, the dogma of the Immaculate Conception waspronounced and defined by Pius IX. Today another Pontiff and another Pius has made another announcement about the Virgin Mary. On Septem- ber 8, 1953, the beginning of the school term, His Holiness Pius XII officially declared the year 1954 to be a Marian Year fully dedicated to a more thorough knowledge of the esteemed privilege of the Virgin Mary, her Immaculate Con- ception. His Holiness asked that persons all over the world pay tribute to the Mother of God. The Philothean Staff chose to have the yearbook theme center in the encyclical, Fulgens Corona Gloriae its means of paying tribute to the patroness of Providence High School. Many titles are attributed to the Virgin Mary. Among these the most out- standing is her title, Mother of God. By this title she merits her radiant crown of glory. It is likewise through this title that we students are able to understand more fully the inestimable privilege of the Immaculate Conception. In selecting the mother of His only begotten Son, God the Father chose from all eternity the jewish maid, Mary. By a special prevenient grace Mary was preserved from Original Sin. It is only natural that God would choose to do this. Because Mary is the Mother of jesus, third person of the Blessed Trinity, she is the Mother of God hence, the title. Since God is our Father, then Mary is our Mother. To us she is in a special way our Mother of Good Counsel. We have dedicated our classes to her under this title. It is Mary to whom we turn for advice in our studies. Ask with supplication, says our Sovereign Pontiff, that there may grow up a generous and promising youth, pure and unblemished... We students in a Catholic school are being trained to be leaders in Christian principles. Through our various organizations we develop qualities of leadership. Foremost in these organizations are the Sodality of Our Lady, which has as its aim making its members Mary-like, and the Young Christian Students, whose underlying motto is the spread of Catholic Action. Participation in clubs is the basic training school for participation in religious and civic organizations after high school. This section of the Philothean we have dedicated to Mary, Queen of Apostles. Leen tells us that Mary was the first apostle, she was the person who first gave Christ to the world, and in giving Christ to the world consists all genuine Apostleship. In his encyclical, Fulgens Corona Gloriaef' his Holiness Pope Pius admonishes the faithful to supplicate the Divine Mother, asking bread for the hungry. Apostles help nourish the souls of God hungry persons. Finally, the calendar, a year spent with Mary, is dedicated to our Lady under the title of Mother of Divine Providence. We believed this to be the most fitting of her titles since a year at Providence High School should be watched over most carefully by Our Mother of Divine Providence. In conclusion, we the members of the Philothean Staff hope that our small contribution to the Marian Year proiects will have been profitable to the readers and that they will make not only this year but every one a truly Marian Year.
