To us Our Blessed Mother is the Key that opens God's treasure house of graces. Throughout the book, the keyhole symbolizes the school, Providence High. It is through the school that Mary, the Key, opens up the gateway to her Son. One hundred years ago, December 8, 1854, the dogma of the Immaculate Conception waspronounced and defined by Pius IX. Today another Pontiff and another Pius has made another announcement about the Virgin Mary. On Septem- ber 8, 1953, the beginning of the school term, His Holiness Pius XII officially declared the year 1954 to be a Marian Year fully dedicated to a more thorough knowledge of the esteemed privilege of the Virgin Mary, her Immaculate Con- ception. His Holiness asked that persons all over the world pay tribute to the Mother of God. The Philothean Staff chose to have the yearbook theme center in the encyclical, Fulgens Corona Gloriae its means of paying tribute to the patroness of Providence High School. Many titles are attributed to the Virgin Mary. Among these the most out- standing is her title, Mother of God. By this title she merits her radiant crown of glory. It is likewise through this title that we students are able to understand more fully the inestimable privilege of the Immaculate Conception. In selecting the mother of His only begotten Son, God the Father chose from all eternity the jewish maid, Mary. By a special prevenient grace Mary was preserved from Original Sin. It is only natural that God would choose to do this. Because Mary is the Mother of jesus, third person of the Blessed Trinity, she is the Mother of God hence, the title. Since God is our Father, then Mary is our Mother. To us she is in a special way our Mother of Good Counsel. We have dedicated our classes to her under this title. It is Mary to whom we turn for advice in our studies. Ask with supplication, says our Sovereign Pontiff, that there may grow up a generous and promising youth, pure and unblemished... We students in a Catholic school are being trained to be leaders in Christian principles. Through our various organizations we develop qualities of leadership. Foremost in these organizations are the Sodality of Our Lady, which has as its aim making its members Mary-like, and the Young Christian Students, whose underlying motto is the spread of Catholic Action. Participation in clubs is the basic training school for participation in religious and civic organizations after high school. This section of the Philothean we have dedicated to Mary, Queen of Apostles. Leen tells us that Mary was the first apostle, she was the person who first gave Christ to the world, and in giving Christ to the world consists all genuine Apostleship. In his encyclical, Fulgens Corona Gloriaef' his Holiness Pope Pius admonishes the faithful to supplicate the Divine Mother, asking bread for the hungry. Apostles help nourish the souls of God hungry persons. Finally, the calendar, a year spent with Mary, is dedicated to our Lady under the title of Mother of Divine Providence. We believed this to be the most fitting of her titles since a year at Providence High School should be watched over most carefully by Our Mother of Divine Providence. In conclusion, we the members of the Philothean Staff hope that our small contribution to the Marian Year proiects will have been profitable to the readers and that they will make not only this year but every one a truly Marian Year. . fax: g' ,i V i 1 ,. 1 f, . Charlene Frie- senhahn portrays the Virgin Mother. Angels are Maria Sylvia Rodriguez fleftj and Angie Leija Crightj. Two outst nding events occurred duri - this, the Marian Y r, 1954. Holding Mary before them as their model in the game of life, they will ever strive to put the Catholic principles obtained in school into practice. They realize the true meaning of their motto, Not finished just begun, for graduation has opened up for them a tremendous new world of people, ideas, and ideals, Keeping in mind the significance of this education, they know that by following the guide posts set up during the past four years, they will never stray from the road that leads to eternal salvation which is the very reason of their existence. No matter what vocation is chosen by each senior, she will never forget her senior year filled with memories of pink carnations, the colors pink and silver, the junior-Senior prom, and the most important event and privilege during her high school years, graduation during Mary's Year. ea Prefident Mary Lou Adamo Vice-preyident gi Mary Sue johnson Secretary 2 jacquelyn Bludeau Treasurer Frances Wurzbach 1 ,N-,.,7,w--14 -m '--s wr MAARY LOU ADAMO Sz. These words although spoken at the beginning of time can be repeated over and over again today to modern man. Man is a social being and needs companions, but this is not enough. He must not only crave companionship, but must be able to open the door to true social living. It is only with the key of good fellowship that this door is opened. The juniors have learned what good fellowship really means. By their active participation in every project sponsored by the school, they have tried to bring about a better, more unified school overflowing with school spirit and enthusiasm. If one adds to this enthusiastic school spirit, the love of Almighty God, the results are the spirit of the sparkling juniors. In their memoirs will be found bids from dances which they sponsored along with a very special bid from the junior-Senior Prom. They know that by learning to play fair in sports, in studies, and in social life, they are preparing themselves wisely for the great role of the future, that of being citizens of this land of opportunity, America, By doing this they not only become civic-minded but Christ-minded--the very essence of life, The sophomores, as they pass on to their junior year and then to their senior year, will find that, by striving to keep these high ideals uppermost in their minds, they will never go wrong no matter what arises.
