Dear Students: More than ever before, the importance of a complete education is being stressed by the school, the church, business and society. For some of you, this will be your last year of formal schooling. It would indeed be a pity if you yourself did not now realize the importance of a good and complete education. I wish you the best of good wishes as you leave Provencher, and I sincerely hope that you will put the ed¬ ucation you have received to good use in your religious, business and social life. To be a success in your spiritual life is, of course, of supreme im¬ portance. Success in other fields of endeavour, I feel sure, will come if the spiritual is always well taken care of. The path of life is not en¬ tirely or always of a rosy hue, as you will no doubt soon learn. If your spiritual life is solid, you will be able to surmount any diffi¬ culties that may arise. In union with all the members of the faculty of Provencher Col¬ legiate, I wish you God’s choicest blessings and Mary’s loving protec¬ tion through the years that lie .ahead. Ainsi fut lancee une organisation qui a tellement fait pour les eleves de Provencher et la jeunesse de St-Boniface. Le Centre reconnait aussi l’excel- lente cooperation qu’iL a toujours regue de la Commission Scolaire de St- Boniface. D’autre part, la Cantine se Micite de son etroite collaboration avec les deux Instituts Collegiaux. Ajoutons que le 7 mai, 1963, le Cen¬ tre Recreatif decida d’offrir une bourse de $50.00 aux sieves meritants de ces deux Institutions. In ready response to a letter sent out by Brother Joseph Bruns, S.M., a group of St. Boniface parents as¬ sembled on Thursday, February 26, 1959, at 8:00 o’clock. Thus was in¬ augurated an organization that has done a great deal for Provencher stu¬ dents and the youth of St. Boniface. The Canteen through the years has received the co-operation of the St. Boniface School Board. On its part, the Canteen has always co-operated with the two Collegiates. Les buts et objectifs en etaient les suivants: 1. Aider nos jeunes acquerir un esprit vraiment chretien et aussi devenir plus conscient de leur responsabilite envers les oeuvres sociales, athletiques et culturelles de leur ville. 2. Promouvoir chez notre jeunesse le respect des droits, des opinions et de la propriete d’autrui. 3. Developper, en autant qu’il est possible, le bonheur et un veritable esprit chretien au moyen des sports et des loisirs. On March 12, 1959, the following objec¬ tives of Le Centre Recreatif Notre-Dame appeared in the Constitutions then approv¬ ed: 1. To help our youth establish a Christian attitude and become more community conscious toward social, athletic and cultural activities. 2. To develop and promote more respect for the rights, feelings, and property of others. 3. To develop a true Christian outlook on life and happiness through wholesome recreation and community participation. STUDENTS GRADE XII MATRICULATION Student Council Officers for 1963-1964 were all members of Grade XII: Owen Bro- phy, president; Larry Wynant, vice-presi¬ dent; Charles Archambault, treasurer. Provencher’s representatives on CJAY’s “Reach for the Top” were Fred Lawrenson and Pat Morin. Fred is also one of the stu¬ dent representatives on the Notre Dame Canteen committee. Philippe Gauthier and Jim Welsh are editor and assistant editor of this year’s Yearbook and both serve on the school pa¬ per staff. Other members of the senior class working with the school paper were Bob Froome, Roger Letoumeau, and Fred Law¬ renson, editor. Pictures in the school paper and Yearbook are the results of Jim Welsh’s gift of being at the right place at the right time. Kasimir Kryszczuk organized the Cine Club and provided Provencher students with many hours of contented movie viewing. Larry Motuz re-organized Provencher’s Chess Club. Louis Constant helped with the curling activities. Jim Welsh is in charge of mixed bowling. John Fontaine made note-worthy efforts to promote music apprecia¬ tion by inaugurating the first Record Club. In the annual Food Drive, Senior Matric surpassed all other classes by collecting 11,310 ounces of food for the poor; this was more than half of the food collected by the entire school. 1963-1964 was a happy anc} successful year for Senior Matriculation. Gendron, vice-president (football and hockey); and R. Amal, secretary-treasurer (hockey). There was excellent participation in sports by M. Monney (football, bowling, hockey, curling); by J. Gysel and M. Mangano (football and hockey); by M. Beaudet (bowling, football); and by R. Brisson. D. Emond did a great job on the School Paper, worked on the Yearbook Staff, and helped with the organization of the Variety Show. G. Poitras co-op¬ erated with the organization of curling and C. Comme il est difficile pour un Canadien-frangais a St-Boniface de penser en frangais, de parler le frangais, d’aimer ce qui est frangais. Comment pourrait-il en etre autrement alors que nous sommes si loin de la source meme de cette culture, alors que nous sommes si pres d’une autre culture qui ne cesse jamais son travail d’assimilation. Et pourtant, nous voyons cette culture frangaise attirer tant de genes vers elle; depuis l’Asie, jusqu’a l’Afrique, on peut remarquer ce grand renouveau frangais nous permettant d’etre fiers de ce que nous sommes. Plus que jamais, nous voyons nos amis de langue ang- laise s’evertuer a apprendre notre langue. Il ne faut done pas, au moment ou nous pouvons profiter de notre avantage d’etre billingue, laisser tomber un tresor que d’autres seront trop heureux de posseder. Et e’est pourquoi la Releve a son role a jouer. Elle doit nous faire comprendre nos richesses, elle doit preparer pour demain des chefs qui sauront guider la masse Canadienne-frangaise vers des destins toujours plus grands. Cette annee, par la formation du club CAP, les etudiants ont eu l’occasion de prendre certaines responsabilites, de discuter ensemble, de chanter, de s’amuser, et de gouter un tant soit peu a la culture frangaise. COMITE Lorsque l’lnstitut Collegial Provencher partici- pa a des tournois avec des equipes de Winnipeg et des faubourgs la Cantine leur accorda son entier appui. A la demande des arbitres le Centre a gracieusement consenti a l’achat d’uniformes pour les “cheerleaders” et pour les equipes de ballon-panier ce qui fait que nos joeurs sont les mieux habilles de la division sportive. Tout recem- ment le Centre nous obtint un tableau ou comp- teur electronique qui fut installe au mur ouest de notre vaste gymnase. When Provencher Collegiate entered athletic teams in competition with Winnipeg and subur¬ ban teams, the Canteen came out in full support of these activities. In response to a request from the coaches, it graciously agreed to purchase bas¬ ketball and cheerleader uniforms, that make our teams and cheerleaders among the best dressed in the league.
