Commanding Officer Captain William A. Evans IV William Ashley Evans IV was born on March 16th, 1944, in Bonham, Texas. He attended the University of California at Berkeley for a year before entering the U.S. Naval Academy. After graduation, he was commissioned an Ensign on June 7th, 1967. Naval Nuclear Power School at Mare Island, California was followed by prototype training at Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Basic Submarine School at New London, Connecticut. In March 1969 Captain Evans reported to the USS SARGO CSSN 5835 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and spent two years as Communicator, Electrical Reactor Controls, and Damage Control Assistant. Ordered to the pre-commissioning crew of the USS ARCHERFISH CSSN 678J,- he served as a Division Officer until reporting to USS SWORDFISH CSSN 5791 in 1974 as Navigator and Operation Officer. He served as Executive Officer of USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT QSSBN 6001 and USS ASPRO CSSN 6481. From 1981 to 1983 he was assigned as the Executive Assistant to the Deputy and Chief of Staff, Com- mander U.S. Pacific Fleet. Captain Evans assumed command of USS GRAYLING CSSN 6465, homeported in Charles- ton, South Carolina in 1984.
