Q revolution? democracy? an Americon promise? how ' s that? f ' If ill m - «t- dilHwAa Promises, Promises? The American promise lists life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in the Declaration of Independence. A Celebration of Promises? Dut Biologists ore still defining life and sociologists ore defining life quality. Radicals and Consen atives want to know who ' s liberty is being considered. Psychologists try to help people find happiness. f Too many promises? Could it be that America has simply promised too much? Doth equality and freedom, both individuolism ond order, both growth and stability, both power and innocence— is it oil more than con be accomplished? Perhaps. And yet- f The promise is self government in freedom, under low and with self-restraint. Freedom, like the Declaration itself, is not a gift but a permanent demand on us to keep giving. I Perhaps in our minds we need to insert in the Declaration some words iil e these . . . that all men ore endowed by their creator with certain inescapable duties and that among these ore work, learning, and the pursuit of responsibility. The American promise still lives. For your help hard work advice and gentle guidance. Helping to boost Prosser High ' s school spirit was the Mustang Band. Starting out the fall season they performed at four half time shows and six parades. Under the direc- tion of drum major (Tom Moore) and majorette (Kathy Ammerman) the pep band rallied the crowds at home bas- ketball games with their spirited arrangements. Striving for perfection, the newly formed Cadet Band marched their way through their freshman year. With the help of the Mustang Band they performed in all concerts and finished up the year by participating in their first parade and band contest. 13 Drill Team First at Norma Rochn, I.lsn Mnsscy. Many new moves were created by their new advisor Janelle Gaber. They started their practices in early July to prepare themselves for the Prosser, Ellensburg, and Sunnyside parades. All their hard work paid off when they clinched first prize at the Sunnyside Sunshine Days Parade. The team continued a busy year performing drill and dance routines at football and basketball half times. Selling turquoise necklaces was one of their money raising projects which helped finance their way to state competition. 15 Mustangs Hove Mustangs hard at practice. FHA Cherish yesterday,- live for today; reach out for tomorrow 62 h The purpose of I ' HA is to provide opportunities for self-dovelopnient in prepai-ation for family and community living. Each year they choose an indepth project. This year ' s project was raising money for the Cancer Society. In so doing they tried to cari-y out the national Bicentennial theme. The main project this year was Stars and Stripes Boutique. The FHA made crafts to sell and gave all the money earned to the Cancer Society. Some of the activities were: Regional Day, which is held in the fall. It was held this year in Wapato on October 18. Open House for the Boutique was November 1. They also sponsored several dances. Each year the FHA sponsors a Mother ' s Tea to honor all the Senior Mothers. The theme this year was My Funny ' alentine. The stage was decorated with red foil and white cupids and an abundance of red, white and pin] crepe paper adorned the wallcway. The tea began with a welcome given by FHA President, Dorothy Rice. A vai-iety of sewing talents were shown by the girls as each was escorted by a Senior boy. Commentators were Norma Rocha, Holly Miller, Maureen Heincmann and Kris Austin. After each modeling section there was a talent section ranging from singing to tap dancing, per- formed by students and teachers. The Tea was something special to remember largly through the efforts of Jeanne Crawford and Nancy Hayes who were chairpersons for the event. Girls ' and Boys ' State Girls ' and Boys ' State is a learning experience sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary. Delegates are chosen by Legioneers on the basis of a short talk given by each student hoping to attend. This year ' s Evergreen Girls ' State was held on the Central Washington State campus in EUensbm-g June 8-15. Boys ' State took place on the same campus June 15-22. The whole week was spent learning about our government by participating in local, county and state duties. At both Girls ' and Boys ' State a Governor is elected who vetoes or passes bills from the State Legislatui-e. Two Sen- ators are also elected and these girls and boys are then delegates to Girls ' and Boys ' Nation which takes place the last part of June. Most of the time Girls ' and Boys ' Staters ai-e kept busy campaigning for offices, working on a solution to the city problem and trying to get bills passed in the Legislature. There is free time in which everyone chooses an activity ai-ea to have some relaxation. By the time the week is over everyone has leai-ned so much about the government and its functions. An added benefit is the many long-lasting fi ' iendships which have been made. 67 FDLA First row: Rosa I.una, Melanlc Balrrl, Diane Seeber, Debbie BeauHry, Robin Watts, Maria Rivera, Connie Moreno, Alma f nUina, Lupc I.fiRuna.s. This was first grade! We were kept in line by the thought of being sent to IVIiss Keene. We had to struggle our way through the 3 r ' s — reading, ' riting and ' rithmetic — and if it wasn ' t for recess we would have died. In the second grade we were finally in the swing of things, meaning we were allowed to play on the monkeybars. Our daily routine was interrupted for visits to the post office, public library, and fire station. Of course our favorite game was boys chase girls, or in some cases girls chase boys! Being in the third grade meant being top dogs and monkeybars were replaced with four square and basketball. We were taught the skill of writing in writing and put through the torture of learning multiplication tables up to five. With this knowledge we were ready for the elementary grades in a school clear across town. We were impressed with our field trips to the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company and McNary Dam. We were exposed to the trauma of changing two classes a day. At the end of our stay we held a picnic in the park with food and fun for all. On to Junior High! We cried. Lockers, combinations, and no recess threw us at first, but the idea of dances made up for it. We even got used to changing classes. The highlight of our only year in Junior High was the magazine drive. We soon learned who the best salesmen were. But we had to say goodbye to PJHS and welcome the new Middle School. The ninth graders were moved to the High School, so as eighth graders we were on the top. We held our first ASB elec- tion, with Joe Hall winning the Presidency. Upon entering High School we felt the pangs of being Freshmen. For our first Homecoming we picked the theme Spike the Viks. It proved the age old proverb Freshmen never win. As Sophomores, we showed the Seniors who had spirit by winning the spirit stick for the whole year. In our Junior year we had the winning Homecoming float with the theme Flip the Grizzlies Sunnyside Up. Our Senior year was the best ever. Homecoming saw Seniors first in the hall and float with the theme Boil the Birds. We were victorious over the Hanford Falcons 7-6, a very appropi ' iate number. Seven months later the noise died dowTi and we walked through the halls with nothing but memories. The day had come for us to leave our childhood dreams and face adult realities knowing that . . .
