Griffith Boys' Treasurer-Dick Mansure Girls' Treasurer-Marian Bacon SOPHGMCRE CLASS .M the beginning of the year the Sophomore Class held a meeting under the direc- tion of our class advisor, Miss Helen l.Cl'Cll, at which time we elected the following offi- cers: Ralph Sloan, President, Martha tiriliith, Secretary, and Dick Mansure and Marion llacon, Treasurers. In addition to these the following were also elected to be on the executive staff: Betty Miller, Ruth Haines, Andrew Fritz, Harold Brown, and Harry Diener. Raising money proved to be our most ditlicult problem this year, due to the war. We decided to sell peanut crunch, during which time we ambitious Sophs were seen, loaded down with boxes, using our powers of salesmanship on both students and faculty. May Ist brought our first big dance, the Sophomore Hop. The well decorated hall created a pleasant atmosphere for all the couples. The climax of the evening was the selection of the lovely May Queen, who was chosen from girls present. The Hop proved to he an outstanding social event, as students danced to melodious strains. The class of 45 has been well represented in all school activities. Herb Artwell and Ken Hemlmerger left excellent records in football. Marion Bacon, lilinor Duke, lillen ,lane Patterson. and Nadeen MacNamee all made first team in hockey. Harold llrown and Ralph Sloan were very important baseball candidates. Herb Artwell and l.arry Labor were essential in the basketball quintet. The l3and's snappy color guard unit consisted of six sophomores with one as an alternate. They are fXlarty tiritlith, Ruth Haines, lilinor Duke, Jean XN'illiams, Mary Lou Chambers, and Alice White. Xl'e have thoroughly enjoyed this. our first year in Senior High School. The club also has a War map on which they keep the battle areas posted. Home Nursing Club Under the leadership of Mrs. Winter- ling, the members of the Home Nursing Club are learning First Aid and care of the sick at home, two necessary activi- ties in aiding the war effort. Light and fast, he did more than his share of the line playi Un several occasions, referees commented on his clean, hard, offensive blocking Our center was llob Mad Russian lfigulski. He achieved his life-time ambition by calling plays this year and did a very thorough job of it. llefensively he backed up the middle of the line. A four year letterman, he was selected on the lirst team All-llelco, second team .XllfSuburban and honorable mention .'Xll-Scholastic. Howard Arnold, a strong fast right guard, was a block of granite in the middle of the line. He could open holes offensively' and close them defensively' with equal skill. Ken Hemberger and Don Thompson, rugged tackles, were two strong parts on the line. Sopho- more and senior respectively, these two dyna- mos could be counted on for a terrihc perform'- ance in every game. Don Tapper, substitute end. was the fastest runner on the team. With his heart in his work 'fTap always played one of the best defensive games on the line. Herb llrower, our tall lanky scat back, was another of our seniors. Although he was a sub- stitute. i'Sam played a hard game, coming through as a good, fast ball carrier. Marlin Wiilson, senior. was substitute tackle. ln his first year of football, Marlin proved he had the 'fgutsu and deterinination to play this ll12lf1iS game. lYalt Riggins, a junior, played right end like a veteran and was especially good at catching passes. Hard to stop this year, he should be detinitely outstanding next year. The success of the season was due in a large part to good conditioning which Coach Millard Robinson gave the boys. This was Hobbies fourth year at Prospect High. ln these four years he has built himself a reputation as the most aggressive and respected coach in this area.
