B. Broomfield Tom Carlton School Board lvlessage It gives me great satisfaction to see students such as these young men and women, who, in spite of the turmoil and war, never hesitate in their learning, and with great courage go out into the world little know- ing what the future may have in store for them. n Having been a former student and graduate of Prospect High School, I consider it a very great privilege and honor to be called on to add a few lines to this School Annual of l945. On behalf of the Board of Directors I should like to extend to the students and the faculty members our deepest appreciation and thanks for their co- operation and thoughtfulness throughout the School year of l944-l945. CHAS. BURTON BROOMFI ELD, A Chairman. Earl Ulrich Rose J. Kelly Clerk Principalls lvlessage Prospect High School, along with the rest of our public schools, has been doing its part to meet the emergency, which now exists. The burden of carrying on in the midst of war, has rested on the capable shoulders of our teaching staff, principal, and school directors, each of which has had a task to do and has done it well. The task of carrying on the duties of providing the funda- mental training necessary for participation in the armed forces, for service at home and abroad, though difficult, has been met. lt has not been necessary to drop any of our courses. ln- stead, we have added Advanced Algebra, Trigonometry, Ad- vanced Shorthand, Bookkeeping, Chemistry, Latin, and Business Arithmetic. Each of these courses has helped to enrich Pros- pect's educational opportunities. With a splendid group of officers in our Student Body, Classes and Organizations, Student Activities have really gone to the top. Not only were these events well organized, but also a good time and lots of fun was had by all. The only regrets which we have felt during the year have been those Good-byes that have been hard to say. Prospect's Directors, Faculty, and Students, promise these fellow classmates that our Education Banner will be carried high until victory is won. l Maurice E. Scheel Albert E. Class colors-Green and White ' Class flower-Carnation Motto - Anything worth doing is worth doing well. The seniors of '45 were very active in class and school affairs. Their first party was held at Grieve's, followed soon thereafter by one in Medford, then a farewell party for Bennie Ash at Mr. Scheel's home, and last, but not least, a Junior-Senior party in Medford. During this last party, the Seniors had their pictures taken for the Annual. A pennant, in class colors, was purchased from class funds and hung in the library. The graduates wore caps and gowns for graduation exercises and baccalaureate services. This was something new in the history of Prospect High. The Juniors and Seniors collaborated in many activities this year. The Junior-Senior banquet and prom were held May 5 in the gym. lt was a semi-formal affair. lnvitations were issued to all the alumni and other guests included all Juniors, Seniors, and their dates. King for the evening, Dee Neville, was chosen from among the Seniors by his fellow classmates, and the queen, Virginia Ridgeway, was his date for the event. An or- chestra from Medford was hired for the dance. The Juniors and Seniors also got together on the play Everything Happens to Us and gave some fine performances. The Seniors enjoyed their sneak despite the efforts of the Juniors to overtake them. Everyone was sorry to see some of the boys leave, before graduation, for the armed forces. We find ourselves idling down our smocket ia small rocketl to about IOO miles per hour. We land on the roof of our plastic, revolving with the sun to get the full effect, apartment. We descend by means of an escalator and get there in time to hear the telephone ring and immediately realize that it is father, cause it plays How Dry I Am . By means of television we contact the Rocket Cab Company and by the time we have switched off the television, our cab is waiting. We ascend into the depths of overstuffed seats and relax in the lapse of time it takes us to get to Mrs. Elinor Ajou's, the for- mer Elinor Mee ithis is a case of you and Mee getting marriedl luxurious residence Csome relation to residuel. We thank the cab driver for his conservative and slow driving, only going 20 miles per minute, We give him the sc0tchman's tip of our hat. Then as he takes off his dust filter mask, we recognize LEE CUSHMAN. What? A man? No a surprise! That's Lee for you-surprising. We indulge in a short con- versation but both must be on our way, but, we get on our feet instead and travel on lour feeti. As we press the door button, a trap door opens under us and we slide down a shoot and emerge in the back yard confronting a sign reading thus: No Peddlers AI- lowed . We, therefore, try the servant entrance. We meet the large cook who asks us our business. Oh, you must be the laundry man . And, without further introductioin, shows us the large pile of laundry disregarding our weak protests. Then the Mistress takes steps toward the freeing of her cat to the outdoors. We pick the laundry, so big we can't see around it, and start towards where we think the door is. Our calculations are a bit hazy, though, because we col- lide with an unexpected obstacle, and the laundry isn't the only thing that piles up, Fighting our way out of this mass, we come face to face with ELINOR and are recognized. We are shown the utmost courtesy and chat for a time. But we must hurry on to see more of our former classmates, so we bid a pleasant adieu and make our way towards a drug store. And ask for a nomaceti- cacidester of salicylic acid, otherwise known as aspirin. And who should wait on us but DEE NEVILLE, the soda jerk. Since Dee was the druggist,' we talked over old times over a sundae. As we start to leave the drug store we meet one of Iife's greatest problems, ARLEIGH ANDERSON. He is now a well known comedian. He informs us that he hasn't time to chat because he has to hurry to a broadcast. At this informatioin, we turn our television set in our smocket which has arrived by remote control. We see and hear the announcer as follows: Ladies and Gentlemen, I now present America's No. I sweater girl, EVA FREY. Say Hello to the folks, Eva. Hello iclap clap? applaud!! Thank you, Eva . And now, ladies and gents, I present Ethelbert Oglethorpe iscream - s c r e a mi, I will now sing the Sheephearder's Blues, or, There'll Never be Another You . lmore screams and swoonsl. We recognize Ethelbert Oglethorpe as RAY MULLEN. 8 As we look out of the window of our smocket, we see a farmer plowing his field in triangles, We con- sider the source and let it pass for it is CLAUDE TURNER iIt's his idea of contour plowingi. We came to the forest lands and come down to watch the logging operations. Even in this age of plastics, wood is a vital element to mankind. As we watch, something nudges us from behind and we turn around to find a bulldozer which has sneaked up behind us under cover of the donkey engines. Who should be driving the cat but BENNIE ASH. He was in too much of a hurry to finish his work ,so I didn't get to communicate with him long, but made a short dinner date tonight to talk over old times. We now transverse to sunny California--drip, drip fwhere When it Rains, it Pours, or Bring Out the Life Boat, Mammy, I think it's going to sprinkle . We alight on the Dude Ranch of HAZEL SHOUGH. A big reception committee comes out to meet us, namely, Hazel. But all kidding aside, she looks as fit as a fiddle and just as high strung. Rounding a corner of a building, I ran into a brick wall, no, it couIdn't have been a brick wall cause it fell down and so did I. I helped her up-and who do you suppose it was-VIRGINIA RIDGEWAY. What are you doing here, Virginia? I'm a photographer for the Daily Owl. If the news isn't hot, we don't give a hoot! ' You sure got a line . When did they let you out? Oh, ever since I got left out . We now wind my way back towards my smocket and as I'm about to get in, a gruff voice commands: Hey, you get out of there . I turn around and confront GLENN FAIRCHILD, an Army Sarge. How about a ride back to the big city ?i' Sure , A few seconds later we arrive in the big city. l got to get back to camp, so I got'a leave. So- long . Guess that covers the class of '45-no, wait a minute-who's that coming down the street with I3 little kids hanging on her-Why, it's BETTY NEW- BURN! Before we can reach her, she turns in to a large modern house. We rush up to the door and ring the bell. The door opens and there is Betty. Hello, Betty . Hello, I'm sure glad to see you . Were those all your chiIdren ? No, I'm a governess here . Oh, well, I must be going. My dinner is probably ready . And so ends a busy day in the future. All kidding aside, the class of '45 has shown them- selves worthy of graduating from P H S and set a high ideal for the Senior Classes to come. The pro- phecy is all sort of kidding, but in reality, whatever profession each choose, I'm sure they will be success- ful as they were in P H Sl The Happy Ending JLJNICN2 CLASS The Junior Class was awarded the honors of winning the first semester home room contest of the school as declared by the Student Council, February l, l945.
